Mary "Marguerite" Vaughn of Columbia, Maryland died on December 9, 2011.  She was born September 11, 1919 in Grenola, Kansas, the oldest daughter of George Newton "Jim" Thompson and Blanche Harvey Thompson.

She graduated from Grenola High School in 1937.  She met her husband, Everett William "Bill" Vaughn in 1940 when they were both working in Independence, Missouri.  They were married on July 20, 1940.  They moved to Howard County, Maryland about 1949.  Marguerite was well-known for her many talents as a homemaker and hostess.  One of her granddaughters said she could grow it, cook it, sew it, or make it.  She was a longtime member of the Branch and Twig Garden Club and the Emory United Methodist Church in Ellicott City, Maryland.  Her passions were her family, friends, gardening, and playing Bridge. 

She began her real estate career in 1957.  In 1961, she was one of the eighteen founding board members of the Howard County Association of Realtors, serving as their first secretary.  She continued her career for many decades and made many lifelong friends as a result.  She also received many sales awards for her untiring efforts to close the sale.

Marguerite is survived by her daughters, Mary Marjorie Eastman and her husband, Phillip Richard "Dick" Eastman of Grenola, Kansas and Sarah Jean Martinson of Riverton, Utah; her sisters, Helen Sprague of Grenola, Kansas and Jimmie Ann Madden of Miami, Oklahoma; and 8 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997; her son-in-law, Gilbert Joseph Martinson in 2000; her son, Everett William "Bill" jr. in 2006;  and her grandchildren, Saralyn Martinson in 2005 and John Martinson in 2007.

Our mother will always be with us.  She's the place we came from.  She lives inside our laughter, and nothing on earth can separate us; not time, not space, not even death!  Thank you, Mom!  We know you'll always be with us, and we love you.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vantage House Auditorium, 5400 Vantage Point Road, Columbia, Maryland with a reception following.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vantage House Assistance Program or to the Salvation Army.
