John R. Thurman, 69, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Friday, July 6, 2012 at the Veteran's Victory House in Walterboro, South Carolina.  He was born February 12, 1943 in Fairview, Oklahoma and was the son of the late Asa Bryant Thurman and Dorothy Gettings Thurman.

John served his country faithfully in the U.S. Army.  He was an Executive Chef and retired from Food Service Management, having worked for Aramark for over 20 years.  He was a member of Faith Assembly of God.  John was an avid fisherman and enjoyed cooking for everyone.  More than anything, he loved his family and loved to serve the Lord.

Surviving are his wife, Judy H. Thurman of Rock Hill, South Carolina; his children, Jason Thurman and his wife, Melissa of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Dorothy Thurman Winters and her husband, Jared of Summerville, South Carolina; his grandchildren, Austin, Leighton, Hayden, and Ellory; his sisters, Karen Wallace and her husband, Don of Garfield, Arkansas and Kay Howell and her husband, Lee of Howard, Kansas; his sister-in-law, Dianne Thurman of Andover, Kansas; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marshall and Anne Hegler of Lexington, North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bob Thurman.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Faith Assemby of God in Rock Hill, South Carolina.  The family asks that memorials be made to Veteran's Victory House, 2461 Sidneys Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488 or to Faith Assembly of God, 2800 Faith Boulevard, Rock Hill, South Carolina 29730.

Arrangements were by the Brice C. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel, 1193 Bells Highway, Walterboro, South Carolina.
