Steve, nothing you say upsets me, but some does surprise me. I do get wonderment from people who always have the negative on their top shelf and can't find anything positive to say in their lives. They always wanna get something on somebody even if they look really ignorant in the process, especially the ones for whom internal armed revolt pleases them best. They wouldn't know what to do with it if they got it!
Appoint the senators? Gee that sounds familiar. Who would you like to do that? Appointed positions work so well, don't they?Talk about the potential for graft and paid for influence! If people who are elected are crooks where does that leave appointees?
Originally the States appointed the senators to congress. It wasn't a national election.

Which made for yet another check and balance in the system.... Senators represented the overall interests of the state and Representative reflected the interests of the overall electorate in the state.  Too bad the socialist progressives advanced their cause by advancing ideas of pure democracy in 1913 and eliminated that layer of balance.  Moving us one step closer to the dreaded pure democracy.

"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine."     Thomas Jefferson

"The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter."    Winston Churchill

"Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people."   Oscar Wilde

"Democracy passes into despotism."   Plato

"Democracy is the road to socialism."   Karl Marx

Steve, I knew that of course, but I thought the appointment was just for a temporarily vacant seat until an election could be held. Have I forgotten?
