John Oliver, son of Stewart Hawthorne and Elmira Bell Rogers McLean, was born October 27, 1874, near Howard, Elk County, Kansas, and had lived here all his life with the exception of a few years.  He passed away at his home in Howard on October 17, 1944, aged 69 years, eleven months, and twenty days.  He was married on December 25, 1911 to Lelia M. Scott of Eldon, Missouri and to this union were born two children, James N. and Treva Gene of the home address.  By a former marriage there survives four children, Roy P. McLean, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Elizabeth Boone, of Moline, Kansas; Mae Sacquety, of Whittier, California; and Edna Diagety, of Wichita, also 14 grandchildren and one great granddaughter; four brothers, and three sisters, a twin brother, George, of Howard, Kansas; Frank of Washington D.C; Charlie of Howard, Kansas; Tom, of Washington D.C.; Maggie McLean, or Wichita; Emma Van Camp, of Buffalo, Kansas; Grace Crumrine of Kansas City, Missouri.

He owned and operated a shoe and harness shop in Howard for about 30 years.

He joined the Methodist church in his early thirties, and was a regular attendant until failing health prevented his going.

Funeral services were held at the Moon Chapel in Howard, Thursday, October 19, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Otto Shirley, pastor of the Howard Christian church.  The pall bearers were Howard Muilenburg, Harvey VanBuskirk, Bert Morgan, George Moore, L.F. Roberts and Carl Rech.  Interment was in Grace Lawn cemetery, Howard.
