Vernon R. Floyd, 83, former lifelong Rock, Kansas resident, passed away Sunday morning, September 4, 2011 at Greenwood County Hospital, Eureka, Kansas.  Born on July 2, 1928 in Rock, Kansas, he was the son of Ralph T. "Rennie" and Lillian Knight Floyd.

He was raised and received his education in Rock and later Douglass where he graduated from Douglass High School.  At a young age, Vernon helped on the family farm.  He later also worked in the oil fields.  A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Floyd proudly served his country in the United States Army.  In 1969, he began employment at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center where he worked in the maintenance department.  He retired in 1994 following 25 years of service.  Vernon cared for his mother the last year of her life.  He was a member of the Rock Christian Church.

He is survived by Jill and Andy Ball of Howard, Kansas, and many other cousins.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Bobbie Barr.

Funeral services were held September 7, 2011 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas.  Interment followed at Highland Cemetery.  Memorials have been established in Vernon's name with the Rock Christian Church and the Cowley County Human Society.  Contributions may be made through the Miles Funeral Service, 4001 E. 9th Avenue, Winfield, Kansas 67156.
