I remember the pledge without "Under God". We recited it every day in school, followed by the Lord's Prayer. After I graduated and before I had children in school, it was changed. Imagine my surprise the first time I heard it with "under God". Took me a while to realize that something had changed. If I remember right, this wasn't the first change that was made in the Pledge.

It changed from "my" flag to "the" flag and there may have been another change also. The "Under God" part was added as an anti Communist measure..on Flag Day in 1954.

You had to have lived when Eisenhower was President and Joe Mc Carthy's "commies under every leaf' was going on to understand it. I'm sure you are too young to get it.

Actually I was speaking to Red. The President was trying to calm the people and get them to reconnect their country with God. At that time the communists were known to be anti God, anti organized religion of any kind. You are apparently very strict separation of church and state, but where does that leave our schools? No prayer, no flag, or neither? Where will the kids be taught any of it?
By the way, to digress...For the last several years we have been running into a really odd thing at Safety Town. More and more of the four year olds didn't know their full names, addresses and phone numbers. That is so weird. When I was doing the parent session, the kindergarten teacher, who coordinates the lesson plans for each day and organizes the volunteer counselors, came in to ask the parents why their kids didn't know those important pieces of information. The parents just sat there with no reasons. I was shocked! These kids have been to preschool and start kindergarten in a couple of weeks! Every year Safety Town borrows our 9-11 simulator and when the fake dispatcher asks the child for that information...nothing. It's actually worse than it was five years ago. Anybody know what's up with that?
