Mercedes E. Depew, age 90, of Sedan, Kansas, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, Kansas.  She was born February 8, 1921 in Chautauqua, Kansas to D. Jack and Vera V. (Wright) Holland.

She attended school in Chautauqua and later graduated in the Class of 1939 from Sedan High School.  She received her teaching certificate from Pittsburg State University and later taught in Chautauqua for two years.  On December 25, 1941, Mercedes married Albert Loren Depew in Grenola, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on August 5, 1997.

Mercedes operated Rip's Lunch with her husband, worked at the Chautauqua County Courthouse in the Treasurer's Office, worked as secretary for the Sedan Farm Bureau, worked as a teacher's aide at the school in Sedan, and later owned and operated Depew's IGA in Peru, Kansas for twenty years.  She was a member of the Sedan First United Methodist Church, was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, was a former member of EHU and Beta Sigma Phi, and was Past-President of the United Methodist Women in Sedan, Kansas.

She is survived by one son, Larry and wife, Ruth of Wichita, Kansas; one daughter, Susann Dobbs of Sedan, Kansas; one sister-in-law, Joan Depew; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jack Depew; one brother, Jim Maurice Holland; and one sister, Sharlene Brogan.

Services will be held Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Sedan, Kansas with Reverend Jerry Bever and Pastor John Warring officiating.  The family has suggested memorials to the First United Methodist Church or the Order of Eastern Star and may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
