Can't speak for red. But since I, too, think adult Americans (media types or otherwise) who believe our country is a democracy are grossly ignorant, I'll answer for myself.

The US Constitution & the Federalist Papers, for starters.  What propaganda are you reading?

We are not a democracy?

No.  Democracy and the raw "rule of the majority" is akin to 2 wolves and a rabbit voting on what's for supper.

The United States is a representative republic.

Shame, we have high school graduates (and even college grads) who don't know that.  Damned public (government run) schools.  Let's teach cucumber condom techniques instead of fundamentals of American government.
