Howard N. Hawkins, 96, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at the Kansas Veterans' Home in Winfield.  Born June 25, 1914 in Grenola, Kansas, he was the son of Edward W. and Ora (Logston) Hawkins.

He was raised and received his education in Grenola, graduating from Grenola High School.  After school, he went to work with his father on the family farm.  He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 where he proudly served his country in World War II.  While in the war, he served in the Southwest Pacifric Theater.  

Howard was united in marriage to Geneva Boley on December 14, 1944.  The couple made their home in Winfield where Howard worked for Binney & Smith.  He remained at Binney & Smith for over 20 years until his retirement in the early 1980s.  Geneva preceded him in death.

His family includes his brother, Jack Hawkins of Scranton, Kansas; his sister, June Johnson of Winfield, Kansas; his sister-in-law, Thelma Hawkins; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Miles Funeral Service, 4001 E. 9th Street, Winfield, Kansas 67156.  Interment will follow at the Grenola Cemetery in Grenola, Kansas.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, April 1, 2011 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., and the family will greet visitors from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. that evening.

A memorial has been established in Mr. Hawkins's name for the Grenola Historical Society.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
