Les Davis former coach at Grenola, Sedan, Caney, and other schools died today.  He started coaching  and teaching at Grenola in the fall of 1956.  He was a good coach, teacher, and friend. Will sure miss him.

The man's football playbook should be locked in a display case in the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in Wichita to one, honor one of the all-time best high school coaches, and two, keep anyone else from having all the unique 'trick' plays he came up with over his career.

SEDAN — Retired Sedan High School sports coach Les Davis is among 10 members of the 2008 class of inductees into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

The hall, located in Wichita's Old Town business district, will induct the 2008 class in a ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Davis retired from coaching in 2005 after spending 44 years in the high school coaching ranks, 35 of which were in Sedan. During that time he posted more than 300 football coaching victories (second most in Kansas high school football), more than 670 wins in basketball and 512 wins in baseball.

Leslie L. Davis Jr., 77, of Sedan, Kansas, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2011 at St. John's Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  He was born on August 24, 1933 in Wichita, Kansas to Leslie Lyle and Mildred B. (Murphy) Davis.  

He attended school in Wichita, Kansas, graduating from Wichita North High School.  After high school, he graduated from Friends University with a Bachelor of Science degree.  He began his coaching and teaching in Grenola, Kansas from 1956-1961; then to Wichita, Kansas from 1961-1962; Greeley, Kansas from 1962-1965; Towanda, Kansas from 1965-1968; and Sedan, Kansas from 1968-2006.

In 1955, he married Sara Hampton.  To this union was born three sons, Randy, Mark, and Criss.  They later divorced in 1975.  On June 26, 2005, he married his friend and companion of twenty seven years, Mary Adams.  He was a member of the Church of Christ in Sedan.  He also was a member of the ASA Softball, Friends University of Wichita, and Kansas Hall of Fames.  He also received Coach of the Year awards for Baseball in 1979 and was District #5 National Coach of the Year in 1981 and Area Football Coach of the Year in 1999-2000.  He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and attending sporting events.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; thee sons, Randy and wife Karen Davis of Caney, Kansas, Mark and wife, Cassandra Davis of Winfield, Kansas, and Criss and wife Jill Davis of Caney, Kansas; two stepdaughters, Debra and husband, Tom Brunstetter of rural Sedan, Kansas, and Connie and husband, Larry Malone of Moline, Kansas; two brothers David Davis of Missouri and Howard Davis of Sedan, Kansas; one sister, Joyce Hull of Grenola, Kansas; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Janice; and one step-granddaughter, Patricia Miller.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 4, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Church of Christ, 208 S. Spruce, Sedan, Kansas.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Sedan High School Gymnasium with Joe Thomas of the Church of Christ officiating.  Burial will follow at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to the Leslie Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Church of Christ in Sedan, and remembrances may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.

There is a wonderful tribute to this man in today's Wichita Eagle.  He was truly respected.
