William E. Barter, dental surgeon since 1894, was born in Atilla, Illinois, November 13, 1869, son of William and Margaret (McIntyre) Barter.  The father, a native of England, died at Atilla, in January 1895.   He was a farmer and horticulturist, descended from James Barter who came to America in 1869.  Margaret McIntyre was born in Canada, and died in Williamson County, Illinois, October, 1913.

William E. Barter attended country school and Illinois State Normal School.  He was a student in the medical department of Lake Forest University from 1889 until 1894, and was graduated from the medical and dental departments of Marion Sims (now St. Louis) University at St. Louis.  He was active in athletics both at Illinois State Normal and Lake Forest University.

On September 30, 1896, Dr. Barter was married to Addie Pearl Lasater at McLeansboro, Illinois.  She was born there on November 118, 1874, daughter of Absalom A. and Alice (Allen) Lasater.  The following children were born to Dr. and Mrs. Barter:  Leland L., September 28, 1899, attended Kansas University and Columbia University of New York, and accompanied Rear Admiral Byrd on his two-year expedition to the South Pole, in 1928 in the engineering department; Harry A., born December 4, 1901, married Blanch Ervin; Dorothy, born May 9, 1903, married Raymond Leydig. Dorothy completed a course at Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri, and one at Kansas University. She taught physical education three years at Kansas University. Harry was also a student at Kansas University.

Dr. Barter is a Republican.  He is a member of the National, State, District and County Dental Association, the Red Cross, the Chamber of Commerce of which he is now president, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Knights of Pythias, and the Masons.  He is a member of the Methodist Church.  His favorite sports are golf, football and tennis, whiile his hobby is mechanics.
