OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — The holiday season has Western flare at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. From a hands-on activity for young children to an authentic cowboy dinner and dance and several activities in between, there is something for everyone.
Holiday activities kick off Saturday, December 6, with old-fashioned ornament making during Saturdays for Kids. From 10:00 a.m. to noon, children can make a special ornament. Saturdays for Kids is designed for children ages 4 to 12. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The activity fee is free, but reservations are requested. Call (405) 478-2250, Ext. 264.
Jewelry lovers should mark December 6 and 7 on their calendars to shop Kit Carson’s Wild West Jewelry Show. This trunk show features artist and jeweler Kit Carson of New River, Arizona, whose jewelry themes include the Southwest, cowboys, Art Nouveau, desert animals, dragonflies and the Day of the Dead. The jewelry show is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Parking is free and there is no admission required to visit The Museum Store.
Carson is one of several artists featured in the current exhibition, “CRAFT IN AMERICA: Expanding Traditions.” The Museum is one of only seven locations nationwide to host the exhibition. It remains at the Museum through January 18.
On Tuesday, December 9, it’s time to slow down the Christmas hustle and bustle for an enjoyable evening at “A Night Before Christmas Museum Open House.” From 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., visitors can enjoy holiday entertainment throughout the Museum. The turn-of-the-century Western town, Prosperity Junction, comes alive with historical characters and an old-fashioned cakewalk in the one-room schoolhouse. On Friday, December 12, at 7:00 p.m., the Museum hosts Michael Martin Murphey’s Cowboy Christmas Ball. The 14th anniversary of this yuletide dance features Murphey headlining an evening of entertainment for the entire family. The event includes a buffet and visit from Santa. Reservations are required. Presenting sponsor for the evening is Express Employment Professionals and Express Ranches.
