How about a 6 cavity .454" round ball mold...?

Is there such a thing? $8/100 from Speer or Hornady is kinda fierce. My Lee 2 cav mold makes nice .454" balls with a very acceptable sprue cut.

Too bad its only in 2 cavity models.

Anyone here know of (or interested in a group buy) for a 6 cavity mold? I know DD makes a 6cav conical... but, RB is alot easier to deal with when not having to worry about pre-lubed boolits. (plus, all his molds are for ROA, not 1860 or 1858 calibers)

For reasons I don't clearly understand, LEE won't make a six cavity round ball mold.  Perhaps they would if it were a custom order.  Maybe it's cuz there are so many different size round ball molds offered.  I don't know, but LEE won't make 'em.  Mayhaps Lyman could make a four cavity rb mold if ya were to ask.

Not the soulution yer problem you want, but a second mould will speed things up.  I almost always cast using two moulds, you have to wait for them to cool enough to open, set it down and pick up another mould, fill it set it down and open the now slightly cooled one.  I use two different callibers and drop them in two different places.  The price on the Lee 2 cavity moulds are cheap enough to buy a second.

I don`t know if`in i can move fast enough to work with a 6 cavity mold ... keepin it hot enough might be a problem ... maybe with a production pot one of the electric kind i could .. but i cast with fire and an old cast iron pot ... i burned out the new fangled electric one in less than a year ... wasn`t too happy about that .... went back to the old way of doing things ..  :-\

For round balls I cast with my Master Caster .

I get $5.50 per hundred.

Maybe that would help you out some??

Ho Mason,

At $5.50 a hundred, I'd buy my round balls from you long before I'd piddle around with a two cavity mold.  Make that $55 per thousand and add flat rate shipping and you are shooting cheep.

Yep Dick I get 55 Per thousand and 8 fer the shipping for the round balls. The master caster makes it a little easer to cast them as I can sit wihile casting. It is a 2 cav mould but on the Master Caster.

While I realize that this thread is so old as to be moldy, there are people who still search through old threads for "pearls" (yep, I plead the "5th" myself,) so this (http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/1202/1/LEE-454-6C) post is for those still searching for a 6-cavity .454 round-ball bullet mold.

Dick Dastardly

I now have Six cavity round ball molds in stock.  They are made on the same platform as the other Big Lube bullet molds, stainless steel sprue cutters and all. .   They come in .380, .454 or .457 size.  See them listed on the Big Lube web page.

My fear of a 6 cavity round ball mold would be that the typical differences in ball sizes from each cavity would be much greater than a 1 or 2 cavity mold would produce, especially as the mold heats up.

Unlike conicals, you don't run round balls thru a sizing die.

It could be that LEE realizes this and doesn't want to deal with complaints.

Big Lube®LLC round ball molds are held to ± 1/1000" from mold to mold and from cavity to cavity.  This is the benefit of modern high precision CNC mills.

Whichever mould you pick, better get one. Anybody remember last year about this time when you couldn't even find commercial round balls from Speer & Hornady? That cured my assumption that I didn't need round ball moulds, so I happily purchased some of DD's. Thanks DD.

There is a growing interest in C&B pistols.  One of the things that makes them enjoyable is the control of the ammo supply.  With the ATF monkeying around with ammo bans, there is security in owning and shooting guns that shoot ammo you can make yourself.  That, and the feeling of authenticity that comes with shooting real old west guns in the company of people that understand what you're doing.  To that end, Big Lube®LLC maintains a complete inventory to serve you.

Are these the specs you give Lee to follow or the results we should see from using the molds?

LEE no longer produces any Big Lube®LLC molds.  The excellent manufacturer that does is a trade secret and will NOT be disclosed.  They do considerable work for NASA, USAF etc.  Their manufacturing tolerances far exceed any and all mold makers I've worked with.

Does this help you understand Lucky?

eBay always has Ideal RB molds up for bid - usually for $25 or less for single cavity

Let me re-phrase my question. Should someone expect to see a +/- .1000 inch tolerence  from cavity to cavity in your six cavity molds?

I hope to post a picture tomorrow that will help you more clearly understand my question.

I own three of DD's six cavity molds and, while they produce a good bullet, none will hold to the tolerances he has listed here.

I hope the picture below will help Dick understand why I thought Lee was making his molds.

Once again, will the molds you currently sell  produce bullets with no more than a +/- .1000 tolerance?
