Capt. Hamp Cox

Please feel free to add to this list.

He was young and brave, and fair,
But the Indians raised his hair.

(young cowboy killed in Indian fight on Goodnight Trail)

Here lies the body of Jeems Hambrick
     Who was accidentally shot
on the banks of the pacus river
     by a young man
he was accidentally shot with one of the large
colt's revolver with no stopper for the cock
to rest on it was one of the old-fashion kind
brass mounted and of such is the kingdom of heaven.

Played five aces,
Now playing a harp.

(a clumsy gambler)

He had sand in his craw,
But was slow on the draw,
So they laid him out under the daisies.

(gambler Charles Storms, killed by Luke Short)

Too many irons in the fire.
(placed over the grave of a cattle rustler)

"Here lies the body of Martha Goff--
She had two sore legs and a badish cough--
It wasn't her cough as carried her off--
But it was a coffin they carried her off in."

Of course there's the one from the song "When the Works All Done this Fall."

We all know Charley died at sunrise and had no tombstone at his head, just a little board and this is what it said.

          Charley died at day break
              he died from a fall
he'll not see his mother boys
when the works all done this fall.

Not a little board for this much writin' and who would have the time ta carve it.  "We're burnin Daylight."
