Okay Doc, here goes.

I have only been living here since October but I can tell you the main attractions. I really like it here. It is a small town with most all of the big town extras.

If you are into art there is the San Angelo Art Museum as well as several art galleries and shows.

If you are interested in western history then we have Fort Concho National Historic Landmark. It is located at the original fort site and has many original buildings still standing that have been restored. There are several events throughout the year there.

There is alot of outdoor activities at one of the three lake here. If you want to water ski or jet ski then Lake Nasworthy would be your best bet. It is the only lake here with a constant level of water. The other two, Twin Buttes and O.C. Fisher are really low right now but the fishing is still pretty good on Twin Buttes I hear. O.C. Fisher is also a state park so there are some other activities there.

We have two sports teams, San Angelo Colts (baseball) and San Angelo Stampede Express )arena football). I dont remember what league they are but it is way below even minor league. They are still fun to goto if you like those sports. I personally recommend the Colts. I had alot of fun there. The arena game was good also but it is not as fast paced as what you see on TV. The Colts have there own feild and the Stampede play at the colesium.

Also at the colesium every February is the 6th largest PRCA rodeo in the country. During the two weeks of the rodeo they also have the fair and stock show. Throughout the rest of the year there are several ropings, horse shows, etc... at the fairgrounds.

If you like live music, there are several places in town that offer live music on the weekends. I dont know if your kids are into the bar scene but if they are, I would tell them to stick to either Grahams Central Station or the more well know resturants here. I work for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and spend every Wed thru Sat in the bars and those are the only places I would go if I were just going out.

Then there is the historic downtown shopping district as well as Sunset Mall. WE also have several other big name retailers in town.

I almost forgot, there are four golf courses, two public and two private. The Middle Concho River also flows though the middle of town. It is nothing like the River Walk in San Antone but still very nice.

Well thats about all I can think of off the top of my head. If you have any other questions just let me know.

Also if you havent already, check out this site

Hill Beachy

Although I haven't been out there in (too many) years, Fort Concho used to host a Christmas celebration that was very worthwhile.

Good info here. Yes the first weekend in Dec. Ft. Concho hosts Christmas at Old Ft. Concho. There are many vendors set up on the parade field and some of the officers homes, headquarters bldg. & a barracks are open to tour. There is a mounted cavalry exhibition 2 or 3 times each day and lots of good food & music of the Indian Wars era. Some companies of the 10th Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers ) were billeted at Ft. Concho and it is from there that Col. Ranald McKensie chased Quana Parker and  his 3,000 Comanches across Texas into the pan handle and effected their surrender in Palo Duro Canyon (state park) between Canyon & Amarillo in 1876.

If they are cowboy shooters there's good news & bad news. The bad news is that there is no club there. A few folks have tried, without success, to start one. The good news is that the Comanche Trail Shootists of Midland's range is about 80 miles from SA and easy to get to. The Butterfield Trail Regulators of Abilene is about 100 miles + - from SA.

Then there is the Texican Rangers @ Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg was settled by Germans in the late 1800s and there are German restaurants and antique stores galore. The area is steeped in history. There is a major auction of old guns going on this weekend there,  http://www.asauctions.com There is always something going on in Fredericksburg every week.

The first time the Comanches came up against repeating firearms was at Enchanted Rock (now a state park) 16 miles north of current day Fredericksburg in 1841 when they went up agains Cpt. Jack Hays and his Texas Rangers armed with Colt Patterson revolvers. They sure got a surprize that day!  :D

Texas Trail Boss

I would like to add one correction here if I may on San Angelo.  San Angelo in fact does have a cowboy shooting club that meets twice a month.  It's a private club with twelve shooters who are currently not seeking new members.  These are some serious shooters who are looking forward to EOT next year in hopes of bringing new champions to an old sport.  They call themselves, "Young Guns".

The San angelo Gun Club is also going to start having regular shoots beginning Sept. 9th.
