General Hancock at Gettysburg.
Right again, Russ T.

"General Winfield S. Hancock issued this order to the 1st Minnesota on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, as the Union line was being driven back. The Minnesotans carried out the orders, driving back the Confederates and taking the colors--at a loss of one-third of the regiment."

In RE: No, I won't. If it hadn't been for the rank, I would've guessed Fetterman. But he was a Capt. or Lt. so doesn't fit. The CO told him not to go beyond that ridge......did he listen?.....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..................Buck 8) ::) :o :o :o

Go ahead and put another mark on the wall, Russ T.  You got it right.

I'm with Buck on this one.  This is definitely a Captain Fetterman quote, made shortly prior to the "Fetterman Massacre", in which he and his 80 men were all killed.  Was "Oh no." or Oh, no." what he said when he realized what was about to occur?  One account I read indicated that he and his lieutenant assisted each other's "suicide" before the Sioux had an opportunity to do it for them.

Delmonico

Not Fetterman.  Fetterman was only a Captain.  This was said to a General a few years latter.  And the meaning if the words are true have always been a contriversy as to where he used the comma or not so to speak.

The man in the second quote was a Captain in a Milita unit at one time, although was not a very good one.  He was not a Captain at the time of the quote.  He had a VEEEERRRYYY high rank.  He was also technically commander of the person he said he would obey the orders of. ???
