Okay, I'll take a semi-uneducated guess..........Gen. W.T. Sherman ??? ::)............Buck 8)

Have tried to respond twice, but they didn't "take" for some reason.

Like Russ T said, your guy has the wrong color uniform, Buck.

Four-Eyed Buck

Robt. E. Lee, not sure which battle, maybe Chancelorsville..............Buck 8) ??? ::)

OK, Buck, Robert E. Lee is who we were looking for.

Since we're on a roll here, someone tell me who is credited with first saying: "War is hell."

Four-Eyed Buck

that's at least most of the quote, again from Burns's CW, IIRC, Gen. Sherman. I believe that there's a word or two left out usually. something to the effect: " War is all Hell"..........Buck 8) ::) :o

Here is one:
"Let me tell you what is coming. After the sacrifice of countless millions of treasure and hundreds of thousands of lives you may win Southern independence, but I doubt it. The North is determined to preserve this Union. They are not a fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction, they move with the steady momentum and perseverance of a mighty avalanche."

Thought for sure one of my fellow Texans would jump on this one, but I 'spose they're all sleepin'.  This statement was made by Sam Houston.

Capt. Hamp Cox

"When a white army battles Indians and wins it is called a great
victory, but if they lose it is called a massacre and bigger armies are
raised.  If the Indian flees before the advance of such armies, when he
tries to return he finds that white men are living where he lived.  If
he tries to fight off such armies, he is killed and the land is taken
away."

Wasn't it a Shawnee medicine man?  Don't remember the name.

"This is my native state.  I will not leave it to serve the South.  Down the street yonder is the old cemetery, and my father lies there going to dust.  If I fight, I tell you, it shall be for his bones." -Lew Wallace, after the 1860 election

You've got the Shawnee part right.

Hey, Russ T, the quote is from Chiksika, brother of Techumseh, but I haven't found anything indicating Chicksika was a medicine man.  Nice goin' there.

Hamp

Capt. Hamp Cox

"When soldiers have been baptized in the fire of a battle-field, they have all one rank in my eyes."

Capt. Hamp Cox

"Whenever the white man treats the Indian as they treat each other then we shall have no more wars. We shall be all alike —brothers of one father and mother, with one sky above us and one country around us and one government for all. Then the Great Spirit Chief who rules above will smile upon this land and send rain to wash out the bloody spots made by brothers' hands upon the face of the earth. For this time the Indian race is waiting and praying. I hope no more groans of wounded men and women will ever go to the ear of the Great Spirit Chief above, and that all people may be one people."

Capt. Hamp Cox

Since we aren't gettin' much action on the last two war quotes, thought I'd toss these out, since they already have the answers and shouldn't take up too much brain power.
