i had my heart set on a winchester 1866 yellowboy but i would have to wait for months to get it.  the gun store has a 1873 carbine NIB that someone put a deposit on but never came back.  he wants 800 dollars for it.  do you think that is a good price?

i guess i can use the 73 for now and order a 66 and just wait for it.  i just wanted to bounce this off someone and get some opinions.  tough choice isnt it?  hehe  :D

will the 73 need a action job?  or should i just shoot it a lot and let it smooth out?  sorry for ramblin on...

$800 is a good price for the '73.  I belive that the new 66s are about that high now.  New '73 will run you $900 or more.

I would get an action job on it and then shoot it a lot.   ;D

thanks for the input...i went back to the gun shop and bought it today.  a bird in the hand IS better than two in the bush.  i guess we dont always get what we want, but seem to get what we need.  and i needed a rifle!  hehe   ;D

it sure is purty :)   im gonna go try it out right now!

Good move. Like the pards here said. Shoot it. Smile a lot.

An action job is a must to lighten all the springs. That'll prolong the useful life of it many times over, too.

Im very pleased with my new 73!  It is a sweet shooter right out the box...it is pretty smooth.  I shot off a bench, freehand, and tried rapid fire.  50 shots so far and not a hiccup.  Im pleased with the tight groups!

I cant wait for my next shoot!  :D  The fit and finish is beautiful too!

Should i shoot it about 500 times and break it in before i get an action job?

Abilene

Buck, I have 4 toggle-link rifles, and haven't felt the need to get an action job done on any of them, after making the adjustments described here:

But if you want it "superslick" then sure, send it off now or later.

Good luck and have fun!

Well,I paid $900(out the door) for my yellowBoy(Uberti) three years ago new from a local gun shop and it is smooth as butter. I do feel I paid a tad too much for it and other places told me they all were on back order or I had to order the "66". Some guys on this forum suggest tooth paste for smoothing out the action on these guns,I have never used it. Dusty.
