.45 S&W in a '58 w/Kirst Konverter?

Hello Pards.  I've got a nice Uberti '58 with a Kirst .45 Colt cylinder installed.  Anyone here got one and use .45 Schofield ammo in it?  I'm specifically interested in those with experience using black powder.  How are the ballistics and the recoil in comparison to .45 Colt?  Please let me know what granulation, bullet weight, lube, etc.

The .45 S&W rims are larger in diameter than the .45 Colt rims.  I have a R&D Conversion that will not allow me to use the Schofield brass in it.

I purchased a bag of 100 each, Nickled .45 Colt brass and trimmed them down to .45 S&W length and they work just fine.  The BP fouling comes right off when I drop them into a jug of water and Dawn dish-washing liquid detergent.

Is the 1858 Rem .45LC offered in the Kirst or R&D with rear loading ability. In other words. Like the one Halfway Creek Charlie has in(Kirst) .44Rem. A ported one with no hinged gate on it.


Or do you have to just modify/port one of these?

Kirst offers one with a gate on it. If you want one without the gate, I'd think you could just port it yourself. If you wreck the backing plate, Kirst will always have a replacement one for you.

Hi Smokin  ................if Kirst had  those,....it would be called a Ported Converter Ring without the loading gate. But heck, maybe you could port the Drop-In converter ring yourself, like Marshall suggested.  I wonder if that's what Charlie did?

Tizwin,....As far as using the Schofield case in my R&D ( I don't use any Kirst cyls. at the moment) ....I noticed what Grapeshot did,... about the Schofield rims being slightly larger, and what I did was take a dowel that would just fit inside the Schofield case, ...put it in the drill press so's I could slip Schofield cases on & off it while the press was runnin,...and then slip Schofield cases on the spinning dowel,..touch the rim of each case with a fine metal file a bit,...just enough to bring their rim size down to fit into the R&D rim recesses. Worked good!

I like shootin the Schofield round in my Uberti '58 Rem with the R&D cyl.,......27gr(weight) FFg Goex under a 200gr soft lead Big Lube bullet, lubed with Dick Dastardly's  "Pearl Lube".........a  pleasure to shoot, less recoil than a full house .45Colt load........but plenty of smoke & boom and pretty accurate.   Nice large lube groove on the JP-45-200 holds  enough lube to keep the cylinder cycling smoothly for many re-loads, ...with an occasional drop of Ballistoll/Water mix at the front of cyl. at pin ifin things get sluggish. The JP-45-200 Big Lube bullet and the .45 Schofield case seem to be a perfect match. I picked up a six-cavity mold from Dick Dastardly so's I could cast my own,...here's a pic of a few of 'em that wanted to pose for ya.....

Yepper! I ported my first Kirst myself. Was a job with a rattail file, but I Got R Done" LOL
Now I have a wonderful dremel tool and that makes porting a lot easier on the old hands.

I think you can buy either a gated or non gated recoil ring from River Junction and the recoil shields are the same for Pietta and Uberti. the only difference I can see in the Pietta and the Uberti Kirst 44 Rem. C.F 's that I have is cylinder in Pietta is .018 longer than the Uberti. (not now as I faced mine off to fit my uberti Carbine. So I have done some work on my original Kirst Conversion cylinder.)

I have a Kirst non ported conversion cylinder. I have been shooting 45Scolfields in mine both smokeless and BP. All have been store bought since I do not have reloading equipment yet. That is next on my want list. With the BP I have had troubles with it binding up alot. It is even hard to pull the cylinder pin sometimes. I shoot the Scolfields because I feel they are more a true old west cartridge. The recoil has not been bad with either one. My cylinder came with the pattern to cut the port. I just have not gotten the guts up to start cutting on my 58. Plan to do it though, even though having to take it out to load has not been to bad, I really would like to not have to.
