I had a great morning shooting with fellow soot lords.  Pukin Dog, Silas McFee, my humble self and several others lent their fragrence to the sultry spring air at the Rock River Regulators monthly shoot.  The gentle fragrence of the warm sulphur drifted slowly across the admiring gallery.  The RO choked, the heathen shooters gagged and the lesser dogs sought refuge upwind.  Spotters squinted and approximated their observations.  In case of a dispute arose, the considerable doubt went to the shooter.  A wise policy if I ever saw one.

Yes, we are one with the Holy Black.  Ours is the last refuge of the active shootn' of the True Powder.  Long may we carry on the generations of learned wisdom of the BP way.

I love the concept of the benefit of the doubt goes to the shoooter 'cause when I cut loose w/the shotgun against the rocker targets nobody can tell whether I hit 'em or not so the spotters just shrug and say "I guess he hit 'em". There's a big smile and a "that's how ya do it" attitude on my face.

So,  whut  is it, the volcaous aroma of sulphur, the billowing white smoke or the visceral knowledge that you have delivered lead to the varments in the True Old West Way?  We can postulate, converse and deliberate till Hades freezes over and Bret Farve wins a Super Bowl.  No matter whut, it's the fantastic pards that make the whole thing worth while.

I my case today, the only one who's view was blocked by the smoke was me....the shooter.  It was so bad that I couldn't see beyond the end of my rifle!  ;D :o
BTW...Iwas the only one shooting the Holy Powder in my posse.  That on top of the fact it started raining half way through the match made it interesting.

Doctor Bill

Just a couple of weeks ago I shot my first match in two years.  In fact, due to the move from Tennessee to NY via Baton Rouge, LA this was the first rounds I had fired in two years.  I did it in true style; 250-grain 0.45 colt "Big Lube" bullets on top of a heaping 2.2 CC of ffg powder and 1&1/8 oz of #7 shot pushed by 5cc of powder.  It was just like I remembered it.  I got to the line, the buzzer went off, I put the rifle sights on the first target pulled the trigger and was rewarded with the cries of:

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SHOOTING?!?"

It's so good to be back.  ;D  ;D

Hell-Er High Water

Shot my first match, with "The Holy Black", this weekend in the "Frontier Cartridge" catagory.  14 stages at 5 Dogs Creek in Bakersfield, CA on Friday and Saturday.  Comments ranged from "We can't see the targets" to "You must have been hitting them with the concussion".  Well, I have two more 14 stage matches in the next 8 weeks and plan on using "The Holy Black" at them also.  In addition, I shot the "Plainsman Event" for the first time.  What a "Hoot".

The only drawback that I could find was cleaning guns in the motel bathroom after the match.  I'm suprised that I didn't get an add on cleaning charge for the room!!!!!!

This looks like the way to go for future matches.

I love the smoke, the flame, the sparks, the smell, the BOOM, the way the RO moves back, etc.  ;D

Welcome back to shooting, Dr. Bill.

Grizzle Bear

This last weekend saw our NCOWS Regional Two-Gun Shoot here in Kansas.  Our usual breezy sunshine had been replaced with a still, sullen drizzle.

Most of us shoot the Holy Black already, but there were a few visitors using small caliber, pipsqueak loads.

But I took care of that by having all the shooters use two of my guns in different stages.  One was a Henry rifle in .44-40, the other was a 4 inch Colt clone, also in .44-40.  Both were loaded with fresh rounds with the Big Lube bullet, and 37 (!) grains of Swiss powder.

They would shoot their puny loads, grab that Henry, and produce a flash that brightened the gloom, and a lovely rolling BOOM the seemed to echo forever.  Several people were heard to say they might have to switch to black powder.

On the other stage, a shooter emptied his popgun, grabbed the staged revolver, squeezed off a shot, and turned to me and shouted, "Is this a Magnum?"  I told him, "Nope, it's just Black Powder!"

It was a great day.

Hey Griz,

You captured the spirit of the Holy Black.  When we shoot and our guns are puttin' out enough report to shake the hills, it brings back what our Grand Dads enjoyed.

I got a new 38-55 a while back and it just could become my Wisconsin Whitetail killer.  It sure is no slouch when it comes to knockdown power.

Yup, the shootn's where it's at.

Really don't think I messed up anything in Raphine.

I did leave the room with the wonderful aroma of Ballistol.  A trash can full of patches and little 12 guage balls of paper towel.  I would think the maid staff would be grateful...........
