Like a lot of others I put my $50 deposit down and ordered my 1887 shotgun a couple of years ago when announced at the SASS Conventions  I waited and watched and waited and watched  the never ending rumors, bash Cap posts on the cowboy forums, and waited some more.  Well folks I am here to tell you it was well worth the wait.  Got my Special Edition 1887 last Thursday and shot it this weekend.  Several other cowboys shot it and none of us could get it to mess up.  It's operation was rock solid, smooth, drop two mod worked perfect every time, and the finish was excellent.  Gun came with all the advertised goodies including the 18 inch barrel, choke tubes, recoil pad and an action that worked easy and smooth right out of the box. I would like to personally thank Coyote Cap for sticking to this endevor through all the issues he had working with China and their factories. If you really want to get a smile on your face, stoke it up with 6 rounds and lever it as fast as you can run the gun and it runs flawlessly.  Thanks Cap.

Hope folks don't pile on this thread with bash Cap posts as he is now delivering good quality lever shotguns after being out of production for over 100 years.  Those of you that are buying the less expensive version (and I have no problems with that, buy em where you want to), remember that they would not availiable without Caps hard and tireless work.

Pards:

Gringo Jack was nice enuff to let me blast a few shots through his new CAP GUN yesterday at the Flat Water SASS shoot.
It is #18 (has "drop-2" & removeable choke).  An' it works real well.
If'n I was to get one, it'd take some practice on my part to get the "drop-2" to be fast.  But the action is way FAST!
The metal finish is good & blue looks "deep".
The wood is real nicely figured.
The fit of the metal to good is fine.
The lever has a cool leather cover & polished brass spots.
The pull seems kinda short, but maybe it really ain't.  I admit that a lever shotgun is a new thang to me.
Much obliged, Gringo Jack!!

Okay, Pards!  There's a review.  ::) ::) ::)

DUMB QUESTION HERE, Pards>>>>  ???

I reckoned that them IAC 1887 clones were the same as the Coyote Cap-Gun 1887's.
Are they?  Possibly built at the same factory?   ???

I shot Gringo Jack's Cap-Gun (#18) yesterday at the Flat Water SASS shoot.
THANK YOU, GRINGO JACK!!     ;D
It was excellent in action, fit & finish. I like the removeable choke feature, too.
However, I must be too forceful when it comes to the drop-2 feature.  I seem to stuff 'em in a might too deep when reloadin' fast.

From what I have read, there are several varieties of the 1887 shotguns being sold today.  First there are the Coyote Cap specials which I have described above-these come with all the goodies including 18 inch barrel, choke tubes, recoil pad on shorter stock, etc..  Second there are standard 1887s that Coyote Cap is selling and these get a going over to fix minor manufacturing problems before they are shipped. This second set of shotguns have a longer barrel, no recoil pad, no choke tubes, etc.  Next there are others identical to the Coyote Cap standard 1887s but are being sold in several locations.  Some of these guns have been checked over by a gunsmith and others haven't from what I have heard. These should be good guns, just needing work before they are shot a lot.   Lastly there are some guns being imported by someone other than IAC, not sure who that are selling guns with blemishes.  These guns have a cast receiver versus all the others with forged receivers. The cast receivers had voids on the surface and where else is unknown.  Coyote Cap rejected these cast receivers while in China a year or so ago and insisted on forged receivers and it appears the factory welded up the voids on the outside of these receivers and made them into guns for sale.  I am sure no expert but this is what I have read on several posts, but is probably not 100% accurate.  It would be good to know the serial numbers on this last set of shotguns so everyone could be aware of the issues before they purchase the guns.

Gold Canyon Kid,
It is my understanding that Cap started the whole 87 lever project to honor his father, and got hooked up with IAC because of the tremendous amount of money involved. IAC is an international corporation spending mega bucks on guns.
Cap was initially going to do all the Specailized work here to make it a Cap Special, then discovered that he could he get the China factory workers trained to his specs.
Good Plan, except they are independent workers and did what they wanted instead of what he told them to do and that is why he has to inspect and improve each gun after it reached the USA. That is why he had to have the last increase in price, he had to fix what they screwed up. The only way to do that was to raise the rates for each one sold after that.
Or so says the rumor mill at least..............

With the gun empty push down on the carrier lightly, you'll feel it click when the carrier is even with the middle of the magazine tube. That is how far you want to push the carrier down when loading 2. If you push a little bit more the carrier drops all the way down to the mag loading position. When loading 2 only just drop the 2 shells in and it should stop in the right place. Don't push down on the shell much.

All the cast receiver guns have serial numbers that start with 05 XXXX and the forged ones start with 06 XXXX.  ;)

No doubt the cast receivers would shoot ok, but not look as nice. Probably not much difference in the price, so I think I'd go with the forged ones meeself. Mick.

Mason,
While I did not get the CC Special, mine has the two drop, also. And yes, more practice is needed! Last match at Rio, it added probably 10 minutes to my total time. Well, maybe not that much, but it sure seemed like it!  ;D  But it should merit "Style Points" cause it is definitly cool!

I tried the Coyote Cap edition that Hop Sing recieved and I ran right out and bought one. It isn't a Coyote Cap, just the IAC 06 model with the drop two feature. It is sure fun to shoot and I hope I can get to being a lot faster with it than I am right now. I need way more practice with the drop two. I tend to drop them too far forward and then have to reach in and pull the top shell back, because the front falls too low to chamber. I have shot mine with just BP and no problem with that. The receiver stays pretty clean.  I will get better I am sure, but right now I would say my sxs is twice as fast, but that is with me at the controls. I love the shotgun though and it looks good for someone that shoots frontiersman a lot. It sure isn't a CC edition though. His is way smoother and easier to operate. I had an ejection problem right out of the box, but I got it straightened out with help from pards and even Coyote Cap emailed me with the cure. He is a cowboy and that is for sure.

Indeed and I thank him for bringing back this gun, this gun has remained in the back of my head since I first saw Terminator 2 as a kid in 1992. However I'm going for the standard version nonetheless. Reasons being a small budget and the standard being available from Marstar in Canada, they  do private export to europe and I have heard only praise from local customers here in europe.

I would like the Coyote Cap 18" version but for me it would probably run near 900-1000 dollars just to get it here due to all the complicate BATFE regulations, getting it from canada is only a matter of shipment cost and getting a $30 import license from the local cops. Sigh, BATFE, you really run up prices on most guns here in europe, especially if one is looking for something a bit more rare.

Well thats my first post, greetings from unseasonably warm Finland.

By the way, this might be an odd question but is it possible to extend the magazine tube on the 1887? Anyone ever thought of it? Would it be worth it to get an extra shell or two?

Also how hard is ithe 1887 to take down? Thats what I was planning to do when I got since I heard the 1887 is rather rough and could do with some light polishing atleast. And there might be metal shavings somewhere in the gun too that are better cleaned out first.

Sorry If I'm flogging a dead horse here but browsing gunbroker and looking at 1887s I saw that alot of them reported magazine capacity as 4+1 instead of 5+1 which I thought was the only option. Are there versions out there that have different magazines?

Well, you guys got me droolin'.....but I'm No. 1017 on the list....I might be seeing my gun in about another year!
Wish I would have learned about this earlier!  Got in too late...

Hey y'all,

Just got my standard off the shelf 1887 - shure is fun! Question tho for anyone that has one....the lever is hinged with a spring, rather than a solid piece lever like the orginals had - anyone know the reason for this?
