Cap and Ball Cartrige Conversion

Has anyone had any experience with the Ball and Cap coversions for black powder revolvers that are available? Do they work ok? Are the worth their $250+ price tag? Are the 5 shot safety conversions ok for CASS. I have an 1858 stauinless renington (Uberti) that is fun to shoot, but I've grown tired of fooling around with all the black powder components.

I can speak highly of the R&D drop in i bought from Taylors last month for a 44 remmie .. but i thought about it for probally 2 years before i ordered one .. i was already loading 45lc bullets fer my lever gun ..so i knew i liked the cartrages .. but i never had a problem with the cap and ball cylinders eaither ... so $ 240 bucks sounded like a lot for something i didn`t really need , and now after putting about 100 rounds through it ... i gotta say , what took me so long ! these are great ! best thing since the invention of peanutbutter !

Well I can talk of the kirst. I own two of them and am going to get my third to fully convert 1 Euroarms '58 Remmy's and an Uberti '58 Rem Carbine.
I went with 44 Rem due to the fact that it is a true six shot cylinder. and the 44 Rem is more authentic to my era. The Conversion years. All 44 Bp conversions originally were(at lest the most common and easily avaiable) were 44 CF. The 44 Remington cartridge is their version of the 44 CF and was used in both Colt and Remmy (as well as all other 44 CF chamberedconversions).

I like to be able to choose which cylinder I choose to leave empty, not have the choice made for me.

Uberti Kirsts will fit the Uberti and the Euroarms '58 Remmy's the Pietta Kirst will fit the Pietta only as that cylinder is longer(and the Pietta frame bigger than both the Uberti and the Euroarms '58 Remmy's. with the Euroarms being closer to the original Remington '58.

If you should choose to go the 44 Rem route I can get ypou in touch with Old West Moulds to get set up to reload(or purchase 44 Rem cartrides). I reload 44 Rem. Mag, 44 Spcl so It cost me very little to get set up to load 44 Rem.

Hey, Thank's for the helpful information "Sundance" and "Halfway". My 44 Rem really shoots well and based on your input I think I've made up my mind to do the conversion. It looks like I have some options to consider though. I'll be back in touch with you "Saudance", when i get ready to order. Maybe you can help me understand some of my cylinder options a little better. I have an Dillon XL650, so reloading is the direction I'll be headed. I'm a country boy, originally form West Virginia and just recently decided to do the Cowboy Action thing in 45LC. I used to compete in other hand gun competioion and have loaded a lot of 44 mag, .357/.38 and 9mm, but 45LC will be new for me. I'll have to order a conversion shell holder plate, etc, and get some cases, so I'm a little distance a away. I've decided on two polished stainless "Goucho's" and a stainless PUMA Model 92 all in 45LC. Thunder Vally does Cowboy Action competion every month and is about 75 miles away. I wish there was some place closer. Have you done the Cowboy competion? It seems complicated. What do you think?

A10 i haven`t had a chance to do a sass shoot , i joined sass 2 years ago after watching one match .. but i`m in 2 other black powder clubs and when they heard i was going cowboy they opened up shooting matches with the cowboy guns.. lol . go figure .. i don`t get to shoot the fun stages but we shoot paper and dinger, flipper targets from 25 to 100 yrds .. so it keeps me busy , the 45 colt cartrage is easy to load and a lever gun in 45 colt is easy to find .. so you can shoot the same bullets in yer rifle as ya do yer pistols . i use APP powder in my 45 colt cartrages because i don`t like to use fillers and the APP isn`t as powerful as real black or tripple7 and i load 37gr of powder no filler and seat the bullets fine ... plenty of smoke and the recoil isn`t bad .

Does anyone make a stainless conversion for a 44 Rem B&C that you are aware of. I'm wondering how my stainless revolver will look with a blue cylinder. I guess nickel is an option. You appear to have researched the subject pretty thoroughly and are fairly knowledgable.

a10mann, here's a picture of an oirginal with a nickel plated frame. I like the look. You may need to round up a blued barrel and loading lever to make it look right. Actually, just a blued loading lever may be enough to look classic.

I believe that both Kirst and R & D make stainless versions of their Convertors . I know they do for Rugers.

I checked on this and as of a couple months ago, the only stainless cylinders made are for the Rugers. The others are nickel plated.

It does say brushed nickel .. i never noticed that .. except the ruger , wonder why ?

I don't know. I even asked if they would make one for me in S/S and the answer was "no" due to the tooling. I guess they have to tool up to do the S/S because of the harder material.

I'd like to thank all of you fellersf or helpin me out here. My gun is a yellow stainless. The blac kcontrast might look ok. Anyway, I've got some time to ponder the situation. A least this gives me a lgood bit to think about.

Since we've been talking about it, I may have to make a two-tone one for myself. Sounds like a good thing to do. All I need is a Stainless frame, I have a bunch of blued parts in a box to finish it up. Anyone out there have a spare S/S frame lying about?

Marshal if`in i had a digital camera i`d show ya a picture of the one i bought .. just as luck would have it .. didn`t even know what i was gettin .. it is sharp , kinda grew on me .. but now to have a matchin pair .. i`d have to do like your thinking .. i can`t seem to find its mate . and its a high polish stainless to make it look nickel plated ... i did find one close .. but i wrote and they said theirs was made by Pietta .. and that would be the larger frame .. so it wouldn`t match mine .

This may help a little. Cimarron is coming with a new NMA that ships with two cylinders-- BP and cartidge. The frame is ported and the cylinder has a loading gate. So far, they are just taking preorders. But with a starting price of $499, this is a good price for a new gun. It may seem high, but when you consider you get a new Uberti tuned by cimarron, two cylinders, ejector, and porting already done it saves big $$$ over buying all this new and paying for gunsmithing.

Of couse, you can save your money buying used or modding an existing gun in your collection. And some here wouldn't have it any other way... I already bought a Pietta from Cabela's, but I'm keeping Cimarron bookmarked-- you never know... Just throwing out another option for y'all.

I think Cimmarron will sell a ton of those. Very good price considering all you get. I just finished cutting the loading port on a Pietta Remmie and installing a Kirst cylinder. I've already got $ 500.00 tied up in the project; $ 199.00 for the revolver from Cabela's, $ 299.00 for the Kirst. I spent four hours grinding away with a Dremel, went thrrough about a dozen sandiing drums, emery cloth, 0000 steel wool, cold blue etc. $:-\$ It turned out great but was plenty of work. Plus. I still don't have an ejector assembly.

Considering all that, Just buying one ready to go for five bills sounds pretty good.

Get yer orders in, I bet they go fast...
