A nice story olong this lines from the Lab forum.  One of the rescue guys saved a one year lod male black Lab from a death row, Beu had been a problem with 3 owners who gave him back up.  Joe took him into his home and worked with him, found a very smart Lab that just needed proper guidance.  Beu truned out to be above average on finding hidden things.  Joe called a friend who evaluated Beu and took him on the spot.  Beu is now in traing and will join a Ohio PD later this summer as a narcotics dog.  Way to go Beu.

Sam, my second Sheppard, the one I lost due to promotion and transfer out of K-9, had been ordered destroyed by a Va. Beach judge if none of the area departments wanted him.  The beach didn't need him so they called us.  They were about to go nuts trying to save the dog. We were two short and snatched him.

Freaking owner had the same mentality as many of the present day Pit Bull owners and wouldn't restrain the dog around people.  Sam had nailed three in that guy's possession.  He wound up in court on the last one.

He came to the range to see the dog just before I finished retraining him.  On leash, I walked out front, sat him, looked down and he was in full alert with the hair on the back of his neck standing straight up.  I popped the chain - no effect.  Snatched it, he settled a little bit still in alert.  Told the guy I didn't think it was a good idea to try to touch him as he hadn't completed training.  Thinking there was abuse involved.  I should've let Sam eat him a new - well, y'all know.
