That's a nice looking hat. It's too bad they messed it up with that modern crease. From the style, I'd say the grand kids probably did that sometimes during the 1940's & 50's after watching all them old westerns. ;)

Modern crease????  It looks at lot like the hat that Herb from Great Plains Hat Company wears which is a exact copy of a hat in the University of Nebraska Historical collections dating to the late 1860's...  Guess you just can't believe a NCOWS Senator anymore ;)

Actually it looks to me more like the crease goes straight from the front to back similar to the 1889 Campaign Hat:

My sister's got a photo of Great-Grandad wearing a hat looks just like that (the Stetson), except it's a lighter color, maybe grey or tan.  Back of the photo is marked "Trenton, Missouri, April 18 1889"  My Grandpa said, yes, that is his "Pop", taken the day he got married.  Grandpa was born Feb. of 1890.  They were farmers, not cowboys.

Howdy all,
as I've pointed out before, that hat is shaped almost exactly like hats worn by W. F. Cody, Dr. Frank Powell, Captain Jack Crawford, Texas Jack and Pawnee bill. Earliest I can document that (or similar) shapes being ordered from the factory is 1878 by Cody. Perhaps it was more common and earlier than most would like to admit despite the documentation. Thanks and take care.

HMMMMMMMMMM!?!?!?!?! THAT would make more like what we nowadaze call a "cattlemans crease"! Which is probably one of the most hated styles seen at any NCOWS function! :o :o :o :o :o

Guage Rod

I Can see it all now, buch of cowpokes, setting round the fire after a hard day on the trail and one the fellas rears back and says, "Hey Shorty, what the heck is up with your hat?  Last week your mule kick was in the center of the crown, two weeks ago it was more to the rear of your head, this week it is dented in all four corners.  If this keeps up I don't think I can ride with you anymore."

Shorty sort of stares ole Shaddy up and down and says, "you know Shaddy I wish I had two hats just like yours, one to take a D_ _p in and one to cover it up with.

The rest of the fellas around the fire sort of start easing back and pushing up piles of sand with with their heels in anticipation of what might transpire.

All at once, out of the dark comes the booming voice of Boss-Wilks, as he shouts out, Hey, aint none of you go enough sense to wear a real hat!!!, don't you know that the best crease is not crease at all, Hey where's the love."  Whitty, pass me  a plate of some of that pig snout and whisttle berries, I'm hungry enough to eat the south end of a north bound armadillo!

With that everyone, moved back closer to the fire, with Shorty and Shaddy slapping each other on the back and laughing right along with the rest of the boys

Hey I understand we all take pride in being Period correct but I think the most period correct of all in not getting bent O-O-S over where the mule kick hit your hat the last time.

Wymore:

Thanks for posting the link. Gotta ask, though, what is your point here? If it is to show that some folks creased their hats, no problem, as I have seen plenty of period photos that look like folks have creased (or maybe just damaged) their hats. But if it's to show "proof" of, oh, let's say, a "gus crease," sorry pard, IMHO, it falls far short of that.

Howdy Dave and all,
I think Wrangler's point for the post (Wrangler, correct me if I'm wrong) was to point out the fact that hats were available from the factory in creasing such as those in the photo he posted. Open flat hats were common at the local dry goods store, that's what common folks bought and shaped themselves either on purpose or by chance. Factory ordered hats were available in whatever shape/crease, one desired/could pay for. Read my previous post. Hats shaped like the photo Wrangler posted were available from the factory at least as early as 1878, I suspect earlier, but can't document. There is no disputing that fact. Many ordered and wore them. More than most uninformed would like to admit. Take care.

LG: Thank you :-[ :-[ :-[. My typo has been corrected.

Terry:

Thanks, I understand. I have repros of several old catalogues that show creased hats available from the supplier, so I have no doubt that they were available -- common or not. I just want to guard against the generalization that because some hats were available creased or that there's a photo of one with a front-to-back crease, that it in-and-of-itself legitimizes some of the modern styles we see all too often on the shooting range.

I donno pards, I think it shows that there's nuthin new under the sun and that hat creases are and always have been as individual as the charactors that wore them!

Me? I'm printing the artical and the pictures, along with the pics of Wild Bill and keeping them with my shootin stuff! Anyone remarks on my cattlemans crease, theys gonna get a look at them!  :P ;D

Dave,
I didn't mean to ruffle feathers. It's just that like you and I have always said, the type of hat/crease would depend upon your personna. Some ordered hats from the factory in whatever color, blend, size or crease they liked and could afford to pay for, the majority could not do that. Again, it depends on your portrayel. Thanks and take care.

Terry, your right on, the only reason I posted it was to show that not all hats were opened crowned, never even mentioned the sloped crease.... ;D
