On a revolving carbine, I fully understand why it's not a good idea to put your hand in front of a cap and ball cylinder because of a possibility of a chainfire.  When using a cartridge cylinder you don't get chainfires. Is it just to develop the habit of keeping your hand back in case you revert back to the CB cylinder, or has someone actually had a chainfire in a cartridge revolver?

It`s not just the chainfires that could get your hand .. even with the cartrages your gonna get a shower of hot lead and burning powder hit your hand ... could be very painful .

When I was young and knew everything, I laid my 1851 Navy across my forearm. Uh-huh. No hair left there for a while. :o

I wonder if those leather cuffs were invented for that reason .. or maybe just to keep the shirt sleves out of the action ... who knows , too much for me in the summer , everything seems too hot for summer wear . if i had lived back then i would have torn off my shirt sleves just like i do now .

I set a shooters bench rest rice bag on fire with my 44 once. Lotta flame out the business end of a BP firearm. The modified pistol grip gives you a rock solid hold why tamper with perfection. Always err on the side of safety!  8)

Here is the pic I use for my desktop.

Take a look:   I'll let you decide for yourself if you want to put your hand in front of the cylinder, or not!
