Ottawa Creek Bill

This is a Tintype photo that French Jack (Bob Chenault) Right, and I had made at the NCOWS Convention this past February. It was taken by DC Rambow & Co. Photography that sets up each year at the Convention. We're hoping they will be at the NCOWS Nationals in June. Bob, is holding a Rogers & Spencer conversion I did for him, and I am holding a 1860 Richards conversion that I also did, by the way the photo is reversed just like the originals were.

Scarry Pair, I notice you did not say which side you fought on.  I hope you were both Scouts for US Army or were you both renegades shooting and scalping and terrorizing the women and children of the prairie.

I would not want to run afoul of you both out surveying for the Railroad, prospecting, or Buff running (my personal has a background In all three), In real Life I have done all but the buff running.

I am kind glad that I am bald so's as to not lose my scalp.  I better get a bigger gun or a couple more.  I am not sure I would be able to sleep on the prairie if I thought these two were on the loose unless they was on our side.  If they was, I would probably have to sleep with one eye one the prowl.

Just a little funning, you guys look "way real"  Keep up the good work.

Vaya con Dios!

Outstanding image, they did a great job! Hope they can make it this summer.

Jim & all,
Megwetch for the compliments, trying to create an image of an old era with as much accuracy as possible. French Jack even went out and bought a new pair of cavalry boots from Fall Creek Suttlery, about as authentic as you can get them....

Captain John Jarrett

Ottawa,

Hope I'm not hijacking your thread and if I so I apologize. I wanted to show a couple of collodion(glass pictures) prints done by Wendell Decker of my parents & myself and myself & a friend. The one of my parents and myself was (if I remember correctly) done in Mooresville, In and the other in Georgetown, Ky. Thanks.

Great Looking photos, I live just outside of Mooresville Indiana, where were they located? Or, could it have been Nashville Indiana? I know there is a studio down there that does the old style photography.

Captain John Jarrett

Irish,

   Thank you.

Bill,

I had to ask my parents(sad really, they are in their late 70's and they remembered more than I did) and they assured me it was taken at a CW Reenactment-Living History our unit (www.5thvirginia.com) attended in Mooresville about a year and a half ago.  The gentleman who made the plate's, Wendell Decker, does these at many CW events around the country. He uses equipment that was made in France in the 1850's ,and does some mighty fine work in my opinion.

Great Pictures Captain!   I knew we needed you in NCOWS. :)

My friend Jim Boeke proprietor if River Junction Trade Co. Always says that if you take and old timey type photo and people looking at it can't tell was recently taken and think it is "old" then your outfit meets the criteria.  He refers to this as "The Eye of the Camera".    You and your parents certainly "measure up" in these photos.

Perhaps we should have a sticky thread with these type of pictures on it.  Not only those taken with the original processes but those which, like Ottawa Creek's, have been computer aged.

Any thoughts?

Hey Will, I agree with Jim Boeke's idea on using old timey photography to check whether or not your outfit and impression 'make the grade'.  I also think it would be good to have these photos as a sticky.

I'm doing a thing or two to my impression, so I may have one to send you all before too long.....

OT, Aapijiig'we Niishin....
Marlan, I've done some preliminary sketches of a painting I am going to do, and the subject is the Buffalo Soldiers. Lone Gunman and I talked about putting it on the cover of the Jan/Feb issue of the Shootist during Black History Month (Feb).

I'm gonna post a rough sketch of it in a llittle while to show everybody, and post the progress as I paint it, much like I did on the Chiricahua Apache cover. I may do this on the closed forum. I'd like to use you and Runner Hudson as the two subjects in the painting.

Don't worry about period correct clothing and equipment & horse tack, I'm gonna dress both of you......& your horses ;D ;D I've researched the subject for about six months and have a good idea of the theme. Again, this is just the first sketch and it could change entirely as it goes along...

I Will,
I think it is a good idea about having a place where NCOWS folks can post their pictures, which do you think would be the best venue, here on the open forum, or the closed one? I think that we should have one or two little guidelines, (1) not be photos of crowds of people massed at shooting lines....we see enough of that as it is, and (2) that they be aged in some form or another.......JMHO (I know every body has one) ;D ;D

Bill, I have been debating which forum it should be one.  Right now I'm leaning towards the open forum so interested people can see what we are about.

Maybe we should title it "Rouges Gallery"   ;)
