For some real fun  :o  put a wad of wool or dog hair in for filler...

Just be sure you are upwind from the smoke  ;D

Are we all done with the lutefisk & dog hair fillers fer now? :o ;)

Ok, I tried working up a simple reduced load fer my Roller today. 40Gr 3F KIK, fill remaining space with corn meal, top with a card wad, and seat a 250gr PRS bullet cast from seriously HOT wheelweight metal. Got five of them assembled and ready to go to the range.

Unfortunately the weather is going down hill fast here. Looks like I won't get any range time fer a couple of days at least. When I can, I'll see how these do and take along my trusty camera so I 'cn show ya the results! ;D

Ho Cuts,

You may beat me to the draw.  I'm thinkn' the fair weather will come in from the west, not Canada.  So, lite 'em up and I'll do the same.  It'll be mid April before I get to the bench tho.  And, FWIW, the silly fillers were to scare off the trolls. . .

hey pards,

recently found out the hard way there is a serious downside to shooting the reduced 45-70 loads at matches where the rifle targets are set out to 100 to 140  yards and are dead as far as no gong ring sound available from them, just a clunk.

and as most shooters dont wear electronic ears, their is no way they can hear the lite hits from the reduced charge 45-70 and the lite PRS boolits.  and as there is little target disturbance they don't see hits.

and i cannot be the only one that wears glasses that have the focal length set at front sight distances, not target focus.    I don't do spotting chores because of this fact.  i can see the hits on freshly white painted practice targets.

there is a current advisory that is mentioned in some cas regions.   it is common in some some locales that advises: if you know its a miss, it is a miss, if you think its a miss, it is a hit.  and if you definitely know it's a hit, its a hit.   with the doubt being given to the shooter.  however, this in not universally accepted.

anyway, the range of 112+ yards is such that the spotters cannot hear nor see target hits with the 250 gr PRS in a 45-70 with 44 gr of 3Fg and grits.

shades of the .32 Rugers.

however, if ya ever find a plainman match that follows sass rules, and the rifle targets are set out to the same distances as for regular matches, you will have it made !

anybody know where plainsman matches that are run under sass rule exist ?

matches not events.   matches in this regard indicates 5 or 6 stages all plainsman.

Smoke in the Valley 2004 and 2005.  The plainsmen shot with the posses, all 12 stages.  There was one on my posse and he was shootin a 45-90 or 45-110?  Full power BP loads. :o  If stage called fer 10 rifle shots, plainsmen would only shoot 4 or 5.   They was usin the same rifle targets as the rest of us.

Ya want we should let ya know when the snow melts so ya can come back to Wisconsin?

hey pete,

regarding the plainsman matches, i was hoping to find something closer to northern wisconsin.

you said:  "Ya want we should let ya know when the snow melts so ya can come back to Wisconsin?"

You betcha i do.   however, it would seem you are in the deep south of wisconsin and i camp in the northern territory 25 miles north of eau claire.

Well I got out yesterday and tried the reduced loads. At one hundred yards they shot a bit high, about three  inches above my normal 100yd setting, and they made a five shot group of about 3"' center to center.

Conditions were not the best, being somewhat windy and overcast, so I think I could improve on group size but All in all I'm very pleased! This load would be more than adaquet for a Plainsman event with targets anywhere from 20 to 150 yds!

Thanks Cuts,

I shall attempt to duplicate your loads.  Sounds like a good recipe.  I have my full charge loads sitting in my ammo box and still waiting for me to pull the trigger.  Targets, beware!
