I just bought a uberti 1873 .On Gunbroker, I should be able to pick her up on tuesday . I heard allot of good things about the rifle but what do you all think of them , I been shooting since I was five years old and that make me shooting for 41 years. looking to get into the CAS sport. I understand there is allot of gun tuning and the loads are of a less powder charge than the MFR. round . is there a any compentition for out of the box arms or do I have to tune my arms to compete. thanks Muleshoe McQ

The 1873 is an excellent gun for CAS.  You will find that a good action job on the gun will make it much more enjoyable to shoot.  They need a little smoothing up and lightening the springs up while you're in there only helps it.

That being said you can spend all of the time and money that you want on any of your guns and if you don't practice and shoot as much as you can you won't be competitive.

Congrats on the new gun.  Go ahead and take it to a match and shoot it a bit and while you're there get some of the other cowboys to let you shoot their slicked up '73s.  You won't believe the difference in one with a good action job vs one straight out of the box.

I've owed a couple Uberti Henry's and a 30 model 1873.  All were excellent guns well worth the money.  I can not believe that you will be disappointed.

I did have one question.  Mine were all in 45 Colt.  But some, including the 1873 I think, can be gotten in 357 magnum.  If that is true, will they also handle the 38 Special cartridge without any chambering problems?

They should handle both the .357 and the .38 without problems.

Here's a trick that helps lots of long guns feed 38 Special in 357 Magnum guns.  The Snakebite Big Lube™ bullet is made specifically for this situation. When crimped in a 38 Special case, the OAL is just right for a 357 Magnum rifle.  The designer, Snakebite, had the 38 Special in mind when he designed the bullet.  He likes to shoot cheep range brass and doesn't even bother to pick it up after he shoots.
