What's the difference in opentop grip shapes?
« on: February 17, 2006, 05:27:01 PM »
Howdy all. I'm looking real seriously at getting a pair of opentops as my next set of pistolas, so I'm curious as to the difference between the Navy and the Army grip shapes (if there is a difference?). And how does one or the other or both compare to the 75 Remmies I'm shooting now?
Dang them voices have good ideas sometimes!

Howdy Charlie,

The Army grip is longer, how much longer, I can't say, but your pinkie don't dangle on an Army grip.
The Navy grip is the same as that found on the Model P type pistol.

A Remmie grip has about a half inch more between the frame and the curve down to the plow handle, if that makes sense.
I have Army grips on my OTs and got them to shoot duelist, the grip seemed to fit me better than the Ruger Bisleys I had been using for CC, plus it was cool.

Adios,

Thank you for being you.. Annie Lee!

Thanks Big Hext. I knew you could tell me what I wanted to know. Since I'll be using them for Classic Cowboy and therefore shooting one-handed then it sounds like the Army grip is the one I want.

Try them first, Charlie.  The 1860 Army grip is near perfect for me, but some folks don't like them.

One of the first sixguns I owned was a 1st Gen SAA with Army grips.  Spoiled me forever.  It also had a barrel cut back to 6 1/2" and the balance was unbelievably good.

The gun was junk when I got it, but Lord it felt good.

Howdy,

The Army grip feels good to me as well AND it was important to get my whole hand on the grip when I was getting comfortable with duelist shooting.  Now that I've been doing it for a while, the dangling pinkie feels pretty natural as well.

If you can, go shoot each type, especially under the recoil conditions that you will use yourself.

Adios,

Thank you for being you.. Annie Lee!

Question really is: how big are your hands? If a model P or '51 navy fits your hands like mine (I've owned an old brass framed .36 for forty years, even shot rabbits with it when we were both younger!)---It works for me.
But I definitely agree you should try 'em first!
