When were grommets used on leather like on saddlebags for the tie downs?

I sent an email to Del to see if he has any information on this. I never even thought about it so we can both learn on this. Thanks for asking the question.

When they got used on saddle bags I don't know, but they date at least before the Civil War.  I'll do some digging.

 Civil war saddle bags only had a slot cut into the leather seat that attached over the footman loop on each side. A leather strap then passed through the footman loop to secure the bag to the saddle. This proved to be not strong enough on the larger bags and the leather ripped out. They then added a brass large brass slot plate to the bag to strengthen the slot. The slot plate continued as a part of the three strap bags until the end of the cavalry after WWII

Great photos, CQMD. Interesting about the slot plate. Even more interesting is that they continued that until after WWII. Thanks for the post.
