I was reading that the boots you use to shoot in the Classic Cowboy class have to be smooth soled with no traction enhancement. I was looking at a lot of boots today but they all had some checkering(?) on the heel part. Would this pass the regs for Classic?

The traction enhancement they are talking about is usually on the sole of the boot.
Buy most any good quality cowboy boot with a smooth sole and you will be fine.
After walking on a bit of dirt and gravel, concrete and whatnot the sole will be scarred and no one is going to check.

Does no traction include hob-nails as found on Civil War Brogans?

From the SASS handbook concerning Classic Cowboy boots.

• All boots must be of traditional design with
leather or smooth rubber non-grip enhancing
soles.
