Harve,

Thanks for the info...need to find an accurate description of what a civilian army scout wore back in the 1870's for my persona...any suggestions?  I have clothes from my mountain man Fur Trade Era persona that will carry over, but not everything.

Two Flints

I have a great sketch by Joe Grande, In fact have about 7 done in a set about 1966. All 1870's Cavalryman poses
The Cavalry Scout dated 1966 shows the scout wearing a mid thigh buckskin jacket fringed at the bottom , also on length of the selves and around the shoulder seem.
Fringe across the chest and I assume the back.
Gauntlets, a beaded sash, cavalry trousers, issue Cavalier knee flap boots , and a pork-pie hat (round crown, no crease & a flat brim )
He carries a Henry, an issue Flap holster RH butt forward, belt appears flat ( no loops ) He does have a cross strap for a possibles bag hang on the left side, plain leather strap it appears.
He also has a large bandanna knotted around his neck.

Major 231,

The sketches sound very interesting.  Any chance you can post the sketches on a new post? I'd really like to have a "look see"?  I appreciate the information.

all of them or just the Scout ?

I have to get a Xerox copy (my scanner is to old not to mention pouched, to work with the software in my new laptop)

I when through them again to night , there is another scout sketch.

This one by Jim Nemeth dated 10/20/82 Not quite as detailed as Grandee's
The scout in this one is Kneeling... has over the knee Botahas, and wear a light color ? (canvas) duster.
He also has the issue CW vintage butt forward holster, dark shirt & large billed hat with the brim turned up ( Larry Storch ....  Cpl. Agarn style)

I own a Deerskin mid-thigh coat , I had made , I also had some original US eagle Frock coat buttons and the coat sports Majors shoulder straps.
Some years ago, I made my long riders duster, from coarse weave cotton with old shell buttons, but you could also use wood or
even repo US issue General Service buttons.
There were to styles on patterns, the longer was shoulder to ankle (my pattern) and a mid- calf length offen seen with a brown corduroy
collar ( regardless of the color of the coat which ranged from mustard to bone white to very Lt. green canvas)
Yeah, I done a little research on them , for films  ;)
The long coat is the early pattern stable frock, the other is the common duster.
PM if you want to know more.
