What guns do you wish you could shoot in a "competitive" setting, but can't?

What are the guns that you WISH you could use in a competitive/ showcase setting like CAS, but don't have the opportunity?

Old bolt-action service rifles come to my mind; what can you do with those? Like an old Mauser, Lee-Enfield, Arisaka, Krag, etc. A lot of those guns are rather available and have a lot of unique charm. Where can I go and load stripper clips on the clock and practice rapid firing a bolt action? Sounds fun to me.

After that, I think old pistols (that aren't 1911's) are the biggest orphans. You could always use them in IPSC-type shooting, but while capable, they aren't as good the modern stuff.

I posit that a "through-WWII" 2-gun competition could be neat. Load out with your favorite pre-1945 non-semi rifle and semi-pistol/ revolver.

I'm sure somebody has done such a thing. Are World War-era service guns really less appealing to shooters than cowboy guns? (Perhaps it has a lot to do with full-powered rifles being such an organizational/ safety challenge; CAS is blessed in that regard.)

Many cowboy action matches these days offer bolt action military side matches.

Know where I can see video of one? I live in Hawaii, we don't get much.

I wish we could get "Zoot Shooting" recognized. It allows firearms that were made until 1949. Also, I hope someday we can get WB to be open to Lugers, Broomhandle Mausers, etc as they were also WW1 era.

 :) AH WELL ;)

Hey there Begle1.  Obviously, you weren't around when a bunch of Skofflaws I ran around with invented "Wild Bunch."  Wild Bunch was originally intended as a really FUN side match, in which you could bring out your "Safe Queens" and actually shoot 'em.  Lugers, Mausers, Broomhandles, 1917 Revolvers, Bulldogs, a variety of Rifles and Shotguns.  It was just GOBS of fun.

Then SASS got ahold of it.  Made "rules" that eliminated everything but the 1911 and the Win '97 for  "their" side match, except it became a match.  Let's call it . . um . . CAS with a 1911.  Magazines restricted to 5, stuff like that.  Then the lazy Match Directors everywhere picked up the SASS rules as Gospel and Wild Bunch essentially DIED.  SASS administrated the FUN right out of the Wild Bunch game.

So:  Your lament once was.  Then SASS flushed it down the toilette.  A real crying shame.

Begle1, what you are looking for is BAM or BAMM (Bolt Action Military Model), and more recently Doughboy and Teddy Roosevelt.  These are often run concurrently or as sidematches to Wild Bunch, and perhaps as sidematches after some CAS matches.  End of Trail had Doughboy and Teddy sidematches during their Wild Bunch championship.  You can see descriptions of those matches in the SASS WB Handbook.

As for broomhandles and other vintage pieces, any local club can do whatever they want.

Only sorta true.  If you harken back to the introduction of SASS "rules" for wild bunch, Match Directors all over the country instantly adopted those "rules" a Gospel.  While yes, a local club can do "what they want" they actually give up SASS affiliation to do it, and most won't and don't.

I have to disagree.  A club doesn't give up SASS affiliation for anything they do that is non-SASS.  They just advertise it as Non-SASS.  SASS clubs around here do "cowboy 1911" mixed in with SASS as well, makes no difference to SASS.  But yeah, if they advertise a SASS WB match it has to be all SASS.

Cap'n Redneck

I wish revolving carbines, revolving rifles and revolvers with shoulder-stocks could be used as main-match rifles.  Either by having two of them, each loaded with five rounds, or a single one, where you would have to change cylinders on the clock.

Hmmm; did I just describe the new "Josey Wales brutality" category..?  ::)

YES! Those would be cool.

I also don't understand why rifles/ shotguns with chopped stocks ("Mare's Legs" and "Terminator' shotguns) aren't kosher per typical SASS rules.

I have used an 1860 colt army with shoulder stock at a NCOWS match.  I was slow but had a lot of fun!

There are a great selection of videos of matches through The Barracks forum in here.
