I just bought an original 1876 Winchester that I am planning to restore and shoot. Everything appears to be in good condition, but the finish is worn, as would be expected of a gun that old. I would like to have it case-hardened and blued. I'm familiar with Turnbull's work, and am waiting to hear back from them about cost and wait time. Who else would you guys trust to do an authentic case-harden and blue job?

I'm also trying to figure out how to reload 45-75. I've read that Uberti has used two different chamber sizes for their reproduction. If I'm shopping for dies, how do I make sure I'm getting ones that are the correct dimension for an original Winchester?

Last question...brass? I've read about reforming a couple different parent cases to make 45-75, and I know there have been a few companies making limited production runs of new brass. I've heard about some problems with neck wall thickness and rim size when used with original rifles. What do I need to do to make sure that any brass I end up with will function in my rifle?

Thanks!

I make my 45-75 from .348 Winchester brass, not overly difficult. I bought the correct forming dies from CH4D in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. They work with almost zero scrap. You must anneal your brass before forming and after trimming. If the rim needs thinning it can be done with a small file with the brass chucked in a drill (this is done on the front of the rim) If you have access to a lathe, it's more a pass time than a chore. If you don't want to mess with it, Rocky mountain cartridge makes 45-75 brass, current price is 142.00 for twenty. In their defense, they make very good products but not cheaply. Buffalo Arms offers brass considerably cheaper but they are back ordered. As to dies, CH4D differentiates between 45-75 Uberti and the Winchester chambering.

If it's an original Winchester then there is no question as to the chamber. Do not get dies or brass made for the early Uberti chamber.

Oh, pic's or it didn't happen!  ;D
And Congratulation!

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

I think that the only one who makes Uberti Chamber dies is CH4D.
