Help me find a holster set?

I unfortunately have neither the tools nor the skill to attempt to make a holster or belt, but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction where I can buy what I need?

I'm looking for a leather ranger style belt with FULL LOOPS for .45 Colt (as an aside why do almost no reproduction belts actually have full loops like most of the originals did?  Instead they just have a dozen or so on the back, it's driving me nuts!)

I need two holsters, both made to fit OVER the loaded cartridge loops, one strong side and the other a canted cross draw made to go just to the left of the belt buckle.  Both should be either double Mexican loop or preferably Cheyanne style.  I would prefer they be leather lined but I am open to unlined.  But both need to hold 8 inch Remington 1858s.

I also need two spare cylinder pouches, which likewise will slide over the loaded cartridge loops.

The idea for the rig is that it is scaleable, I could either carry it with both holsters and one spare cylinder pouch, or one holster and both spare cylinder pouches.  Also, it is meant to either carry the revolvers as cap and ball, or with cartridge conversion cylinders.

I also need vegetable tanning.  And preferable everything cut from the same piece of leather so that they match. Again I'm open on that part, I just want them all to be the shade and color, and non corrosively tanned.

Tooling is great but I am fine with just plane leather.

In any case I need something that is HISTORICALLY CORRECT for 1884 or 1885.

I'm also on a tight budget, after also getting a historically correct hat, boots, and outfit, plus conversion cylinders, I'm already looking at damn near the cost of a precision rifle so I'm hoping to keep this to just a few hundred bucks if I can.

I know that was a text wall, but can anyone point me to a holster maker that can do that?

Yes I know that would all be overkill for SASS but I'm looking more towards NCOWS, also for my personal satisfaction, it's just the way my mind works, if I'm going to take the time and spend the money to "dress like a cowboy" I'm damn sure going to do it correctly.  I'm even thinking of possibly spraying myself down with diatomaceous earth to simulate trail dust, the result should be a near movie grade impression, except historically accurate.  So no weird functionless straps and snaps or buscadero holsters for me.

Howdy 9245,

I applaud your desire to be authentic to the era in your outfit. I feel similarly. There are no NCOWS groups near me, but I try my best and shoot SASS Classic Cowboy. You will of course be shooting one handed (duelist). Just know that you are slightly handicapping yourself as relates to speed, but so what as long as you look good and have a great time.

By the way, I'd skip the "dusting" unless you're planning on getting hosed off before entering the home.

There are none near me either so I will have to travel.  Not ruling out SASS but after getting in to it with a few bad apples over there I'm kind of turned off to it.  (Long story short, they were of the opinion that authenticity is stupid and so was I for focussing on it, and asking questions was also stupid and that I should just buy about a thousand dollars worth of out of print books instead of simply asking basic questions, all in all very rude and nasty and a terrible introduction for someone who wants to get in to the sport and is just looking for information.  I was already considering NCOWS before that but those guys pushed me right over the line with their attitude problems.)

Yeah the dusting might be slightly over the top, not committed to it, but the nice thing about that stuff is that it is "clean" dirt, it brushes right off, Hollywood uses it when they want something to look dirty or dusty without actually getting it dirty.  It's actually the same stuff that cat litter is made from, that fine dust that rises up when you fill the box?  That's Diatomaceous Earth.  All in all it's probably in the would be cool but I probably won't do it category, but I have considered it.

I suggest you tune up your Google Foo.  You're not going to find a Leather crafter to make what you want for the peanuts you want to pay.  You're going to have to shop "Cheap Seats" and look for inexpensive stuff such as "hunter."  Also "pre-owned" comes to mind.

Your starting point is probably eBay and get some references.  You might also remember, you're going to get pretty much what you pay for.  With you wanting basically, something for nothing, shopping quality crafters will be a waste.

Howdy again 9245,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with a SASS club. It surprises me as I have found SASS shooters to be very friendly and helpful, especially for those starting out. To be honest, most SASS shooters these days are really not into authenticity, hence the plethora of two-handed .38 shooters. We all have to have fun the way we want and I have found that most in SASS agree.

As for holsters, Online, both new and used is a good way to go when you start. I only have one made to order holster. The many others that I have have come from sights like this or (dare I say it) Ebay. Don't give up on SASS clubs. They have started out a bunch of us with good advise and help.

You may be able to find used holsters and a belt for under a couple of hundred bucks, but the cost of a belt such as you describe will depend on the size of your belt (NOT your pant size...probably 2-inches larger, but better measured over the outside of your pants with or without a pants belt under it.) That will determine the number of cartridge loops that can be put on it. I would guesimate the rig to cost close to $300.+ or -. Have not priced veg-tanned leather sides in the 8-9 oz. thickness. If you want the holsters lined, it should be done with topgrain cowhide of about 2-3 oz leather thickness. You will need to find out the leadtime for custom-made items, as it may not be possible to get them by Christmas.

Since You are authentic-minded enough to consider spraying Yourself down with artificial trail-dust I would like to point You away from the cross-draw holster and go for one right-hand & one left-hand holster carried on opposite sides, for a "twist-draw" / "cavalry-draw".  Try it, and You will find that those 8" Remingtons can be carried comfortably high on Your waist, and they will clear leather much easier than when carried "butt-to-the-rear".  It takes a bit of training (or should I say "mindfulness"?) to swing them clear of Your body without sweeping Yourself, but the style-points are plentiful...

What would be a more realistic budget then?

Sadly I lack the skills, tools, and patterns to put my own together.  I can barely even cut leather, let alone stitch it.

As for the holsters linked, I appreciate it but I have zero interest in slim jims.  Slim Jims were mostly an early era thing, and to be fair so were cap and balls, which is why most people see cap and ball and think Slim Jim, and why when I search for holsters for 1858 Remingtons 99% of my results are Slim Jims.  However, cap and balls were still carried well in to the cartridge era, and even longer as cartridge conversions (think about it, is a gate loader like an SAA REALLY that much better than a cap and ball?  Especially an 1858?  I would argue that since there is no need to eject an empty casing on the cap and ball that if you were using paper cartridges it would reload just as "fast", and if you have properly fitted caps it would be about as weather resistant, and just as good if you waxed the nipples/used varnish.  So if you already owned a cap and ball would you really run right out and buy a gate loader?  How about a cartridge conversion?  Now there really would be no difference.)  My point is that lots of people still carried 1858s and other cap and balls, or cartridge conversions well in to the late era so why would you assume that they would all have early pattern Slim Jims?  They wouldn't.  In fact I would wager that most didn't.  I'm going for about 1884-1885, character picked up the 1858s during the war and has been carrying them for about 20 years, even had a smith fit a couple spare conversion cylinders for convenience, picked up the new leather about the same time, about 10 years ago.

SCORRS     SASS     BHR     STORM #446

Major 2

Apologies if I hit a nerve.  :-X

With the cost of leather (you want it lined so twice a much needed)
extra labor both in assembly and if you opted tooling.
Of course, that made to order so $300 is light. don't forget shipping which is HIGHER now too.
Lined holsters alone run $150+ each. The belt another $130-150 .
You can find Oklahoma Leather (Miami OK.) on the budget. But as the man said you get what you paid for.... maybe.

Your best chance to be good period looking and quality is on the secondary market.
I might at this time recommend "Packing Iron" by Rattenbury
the book is now quite expense to buy these days but your library
might get you a copy to peruse. It will cover many many period styles

I can recommend "Trailrider" who offered to help you.

when planets align...do the deal !

St. George

'Oklahoma Leather' is pretty much what a man would've bought from a dry goods shop during the era.

Most leather was mass-produced 'Back East' and was found in catalogs, and they do a good job of replicating that.

They're over-oiled, so packing them in cat litter or 'Oil-Dry' will leach out a lot of that and make it easier on your clothing, and the revolver will fit itself through use and wear - they didn't form-fit leather - it got that way in river crossings and rain.

Spare cylinder pouches a'la 'The Outlaw Josey Wales' weren't a thing in reality - neither was a two-gun rig.

'Back In The Day' no one wandered about loaded for bear like Billy Badass - one of the many Civil War veterans settling the West would've blown him out of the saddle as a matter of ridding the town of a public nuisance.

Ever try wearing a fully-loaded gunbelt?

They're heavy all on their own and they shift and if a man has extra poundage, they slide off what passes for his hips when walking, because when 'that' happens, he's likely lost his Fourth Point of Contact, and there's nothing to anchor to.

Read the Time-Life series 'The Old West' and you'll get a much better idea of what and how things were worn - and Rattenbury's 'Packing Iron' will show you what the better-paid segundo could afford from a saddlery.

Also - buy everything you can used - it'll save money and look better, and as C&WAS dies as the players age out, a lot of clothing should be available.

Vaya,

No nerves, I just tend to over explain things and get off on tangents, just the way my brain works, especially when typing.  I'm the guy who used to turn in 15 page term papers when all that was required was a 3 page essay, and knock it out in just a couple of hours. :)  Not exaggerating those numbers either. lol
