Oregon Bill

Received the proper screw set for the Marbles's tang sight and a .515 sizer die from Buffalo Arms this morning, so mounted the sight, and then wandered back through the .50-95 load sticky and settled on some test rounds, all featuring the Accurate 51-350 CL bullet sized .515 and lubed with an SPG clone.
Two rounds of 18 grains Trail Boss -- in Starline .50 Alaskan cases with cartridge heads sanded down to remove stampings. (Was worried the regular rims would be too thick -- but apparently not.)
Five rounds of 72 grains by volume Triple Seven FFFg, bullets powder coated, then sized and lubed.
Five rounds 75 grains Old Eynesford FFg drop-tubed.
Ten rounds 33 grains AA 5744.
The latter 20 loaded with WLRM primers.
Should be interesting.  I'll bring the chronograph on a later range session.

I Beleive that if rims need trimming, it should be done from the front. Best is on a lathe but it can be done with a drill press and a triangular file. Or by hand if needs be. Thinning from the base might leave you with protruding primers.

Aware of this, Sir Charles. No lather at my house, but relied on other posts here that you could file/sand the head of a Starline .50 Alaskan caes so the lettering is about gone and still have plenty of margin for primer safety. Glad my rifle wants to feed this brass without modification.

Oregon Bill what brand of dies are you using ? Was wondering if you had any trouble with expanding case necks enough for the .515 bullets ? Good luck with the range session . ,,,,,dt

Oregon Bill

Dusty, I bought a set of the affordable RCBS dies, and no issues that I am aware of.
I took 22 rounds to the range this afternoon, shot 16 of them and let two young fellas with ARs shoot three apiece. They were thrilled!
It didn't take me but a few shots to remember why I dislike Marbles and Lyman tang sights on many rifle -- and especially this 76. I couldn't figure out how to hold the damned rifle comfortably, and did some decent work when I folded the Marbles and did my best to ignore it. This is four shots at 50 yards, 33 grains of AA5744 , WLRM primer, Accurate 51-350CL sized .515 and lubed with SPG clone, Starline .50 Alaskan brass trimmed to 1.925 or thereabouts using the issue sights.

Excellent! That's minute of moose in any woods!

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

Excellent shooting Bill ! Looks like a good load . Did the brass form well ? ,,,,dt

Good grouping! I also disfavour the Marbles type tang for any "close" (out to 100 yd) shooting. But, it is my choice for  200-300 yd shots on steel. Most of my plates are 17" square. Works dandy for that. I'd prefer the sights on my sharps rifle for exclusive use on targets, but I also hunt with the 76 & keeping my shots to 100yd-ish max the barrel sights work great.

My Marbles is the "new" style. I loosen the staff screw & remove it for hunting & close-up competition - I leave the base attached & it's not in my way. Simple install when I need it. Could pit it all in the butt stock if I wanted.
Reading all these adventures....
I've started collecting sources for 50-90 "stuff". Just in case I trip over one & it follows me home 😆

Slim
