Thanks brother! A 73 musket is a rare bird, do you shoot it? I keep forgetting they tried selling them to the military. Thanks for the tip on the leather wrap, I'll give that a try. Though, since lubricating this thing it seems to be slicking up.
Yes I do with mild .44-40 smokeless loads.

There is no horse so dead that you cannot continue to beat it.

I have a front sight exactly like that, came off a Kentucky muzzleloading rifle, been sittn' on the shelf of my toolbox for 20 years or more.

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

UPDATE:

Okay, so it occurred to me that the front sight I installed is often called "German Silver" which, of course, is nickel. I noticed that mine was heavily oxidized, so I polished it up with some Flitz and I have to say the light catches it MUCH better now. I'm actually able to acquire a decent sight picture.

Has that been y'all's experience as well? Makes sense to me that you would want that front blade to stand out. Seems like it's easier to pick up in a shadow as well.

I'll report back once I have this thing zero'd in.
