Why is a Remington cap and ball better than a Colt?

I like them for the superior accuracy and strength provided by a solid frame, and the ease of removing the cylinders. I think the Colt is a prettier design,  has a better-feeling grip and is easier to cap. Based on numbers sold, the pards in the second half of the 19th century clearly preferred Colts. But I think I prefer the Remingtons for strength and function. What say y'all?

B. Butch Cavendish

It takes a lot less time to change pre loaded cylinders is good enought reason for me.
Butch Cavendish was the first lone Ranger bad guy. Arizona Rangers, Sons of confederate veterans, William Clarke Quantrill Society. Outlaw, lawdog, merchant, mercenary, Preacher. "Too mean to forgive, Too mad to forget."

All the reasons already stated apply for me, too. In addition, the Remmies fit my hand better. I can point shoot one accurately whereas the Colt takes a slight wrist adjustment to be on target. I like the balance better, too. The hammer geometry is superior, too, requiring less backward motion to cock it.

There's one of the reasons they make ice cream in so many flavors...everyone has their own likes and dislikes.

I find the Remingtons ugly and awkward.  The 1860 Colt, especially in the "civilian" version is one of the most elegant looking and best handling guns I've ever used.

Despite the fact that I own about a half dozen Remingtons, and I love them dearly...If it came down to it I'd pick up my Colt 1860s for serious work.

I started out as a convinced Colt man. Now I'm 50/50 on which is a better gun for CAS. The Remmies hold a little more powder, are a stronger action, take conicals, have a shorter hammer reach, and (at least mine) don't get cap jams. However they are ugly, aren't easily capped on the clock (never a design concern), foul quickly (2 or my 4), and vary considerably  from make to make in weight, grip shape, & balance. My most natural pointing guns are my Colt Navies (NOT Piettas! who's grips flare too much at the bottom and make the guns point high) in 44 cal. They are light weight, fast pointing, almost never drop a cap, and in 44 cal ding steel or fallers nicely. To me, the idea of quick cylinder change is a non issue. I'd just buy another gun for "reloads" and cap it. I don't mind recharging chambers at the loading table among friends. For serious matches, I either shoot my Uberti Millenium Remingtons or my cheap $99 ASM 44 Colt Navies. At times I have used all four in a "True Grit" match where there were 10 shots then 10 pistol "reloads" per stage (same for rifle: 10 & reload 10). I shot the Remmines and then for the reloads, just staged the Colts, capped them and kept shooting. A great combo.

Since I have 14+ guns, I've been called the Imelda Marcos of Cap&Ball. Now, that's a COMPLIMENT!

Gee, three out of five responders on the SCORRS forum dissing Remingtons. Guess I expected a little more enthusiasm!
Good points, all, though. Revolver fit and feel are individual things. As an object of mechanical beauty, I like the Colt. But as a working tool, I think I'd take the Remington.

I'm with Butch and the Marshall on this one.I've been playing with sixguns my whole life have had many, many makes and models of the replicas, and as Butch pointed out the Remingtons reload quicker,as the Marshall pointed out the Remmies just feel better, and as I'm pointing out the solid frame pistola is just more accurate. Not that I don't see the beauty in a well turned out 1861 Navy Colt,I do...but for beauty I prefer Redheads. For pistolas...Remingtons.

Personally I find that the Remington design "hangs" better fer me. When trying to draw a fine bead on a more distant target, this makes a huge difference, at least to me. I also find that the fixed/non moving rear site arrangement is a HUGE improvement over the moving notch in the hammer situation that comes with Colts.

Finally, no matter what Colt affecionados sya about the the beauty of the old Colts, They ain't nuthin COOLER lookin than a Remmy, out there with that sail like rammer, belching huge clouds of white smoke! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Yeah, I agree. The Remmies do look just as good as the Colts in my opinion. I think the Colt guys just say that so they can have a legitimate reason to stick with Colts ;). That's just a joke, don't impale me for it. ;)

Forty Rod

Impale you?

That's just gross, but truth to tell, if I liked Remingtons better than I like Colts, I'd impale myself.   ::) ;D

Whyizzit that the Colt fellers wax rhapsodic over their 1851s an' 1860s but when Colt went to make a better revolver it ended up lookin' like a Remington?

I'll take my .44 Remingtons an' call 'er done.

I have been shooting both 1851 Navies and 1858 Remingtons. I love the way you can quickly switch out the cylnders on the Remington, but......... I sure love those grips on the Navies  !!!!!!!

Why, that's just...just...just blasphemy, that's what.  No more look alike than a Lerxus looks like a Mercedes.

I'd shoot Merwins if I could find the ones I want and had the disposable capital.  Druther have S&W 1st Russians, though.

Saw a lady the other day tryin' to figger out why her remote wouldn't unlock her Lexus. It did, but she was three cars away tryin' to open the trunk on a Mercedes.
