Just wondering if USFA Rodeo NCOWS ok ?  ???

J.D. Yellowhammer

I can't speak for NCOWS (I'm a brand new member) but I don't see why it would be illegal.  The Rodeo is a whole lot closer to a Colt (1st gen.) than a lot of SASS/NCOWS single actions. Especially those with transfer bar safeties.  And the Rodeo is SASS legal.  But if you want a definitive answer, I suggest you ask this on the NCOWS or USFA CSS forums.

Thought I would share this email got back from NCOWS I was questioning firerms that are legal and illeagal :
Looks like I would have to buff out the finish on my new USFA Rodeos to be acceptible. I am BN to this Cowboy shooting thing with no history, but it sure looks like there is favoratism toward certian manufactures and what not. If you have a stainless finish, nickel Ruger or COLT gun it is OK but matte bluing on a USFA it is not ???
Using this logic and the note below the "New Vaquero" Should NOT be legal : it is not authentic to anything and there are many affordable clones with many choices availiable today. Hopfully someone will OK the USFA Rodeo at the convention accepting the normal Matte Blue finish.

"James, perhaps I may be able to shed some light on your query.
The H&R Buffalo Classic is not approved for use in Buffalo Matches for NCOWS.  In fact, even the 1885 Winchester Hi-Wall is not approved as it was developed after the buffalo hunting time frame.
To my knowledge, the H&R is objected to on a couple of features:  The modern style recoil pad used on some is not acceptable.  There were recoil pads pre 1899, however they were not of the ventilated type and were made of solid rubber.  Some were even leather covered over the rubber.
The rear sight as issued on the H&R is  not period, and would have to be changed to either a tang or blade and elevator style on the barrel.  On some the front sight would have to be changed as well.  At this time, I understand that it is allowed in Long Range shoots, just not on Buffalo Matches.  I will bring the subject up before Congress at the Convention to see if we can lay this one to rest.

To address your question on the revolvers, the Ruger Vaquero was approved years ago, when there was no choice of single action revolvers available.  We have since had that decision come back like the bad penny.
The USFA Rodeo is acceptable IF the matte finish is buffed out a bit to a texture that resembles a worn blue.  This only takes a few minutes on a buffing wheel.  The Rodeo has not received Congressional approval at this time, but is up for consideration in February at the Convention.

The safety issue of Winchesters and Marlins has been changed, the bylaws state that safeties are not an issue, however we do not allow "angle eject" action Winchesters, nor ramp front sights as both are modern (since 1950 or so).  A change of front sights to a blade sight or a Beech's type front sight will correct that problem.

I hope that I have either helped or not created more confusion.

As I understand the balance of the rulings, i.e. 1885, any 94 Winch (only version of an AE levergun I know of) is a double wammy:  1)  Developed outside the time frame, and  2) never introduced in a pistol cartridge until the 1960s.
Or do I misunderstand?  Most likely, and I find NCOWS rules to be confusing.  Still ain't sure that I'm legal to shoot with them or not.

Seems kind of strange that the Rodeo would not be acceptable and a polished stainless steel Ruger would, but it looks like the Rodeo will be approved at some point.
