The name change, USPFA to USFA, came very early in the game (1994/1995?) as a result of Colt's threat to sue over the use of the word "Patent" in their name.  Their stance was that USPFA never held any of the original Colt SAA patents and was, therefore, making false claims. USPFA, to avoid litigation, simply bowed out and shortened their name to USFA.
This was not the last time that USFA would run up against Colt.  For a very brief period of time in the latter part of the 1990's USFA issued guns with grips that were, for all practical means and purposes, identical to the "eagle grips" that are used by Colt.  Again Colt struck with threats of "trade dress" infringements and again, USFA discontinued their use.
