Buffalo rifles in the Movies

Cleaning the Sharps this evening, got to thinking, where did I first see one of these, and got myself interested. Near as I can remember, I was 12 years old, wondering "What kinda gun was that?!" So come ride the river with me.

I'm not certain about this but I think "Valdez is Coming" preceded "Jose Wales". Valdez shooting a pursuer at ~900 yards with his Sharps Business Rifle (round barrel) got me interested. About a year ago I finally realized my dream and have a Big Fifty Shiloh Sharps Business Rifle.

I was like just about everybody (it seems) else. I never noticed the sharps until Quigley Down Under.

The gun that got me interested in guns was "Ol' Betsy"

I can't remember where I first became aware of Sharps rifles but had the bug long before understanding what they are. Didn't know there were many types and calibre but knew I needed a 50 Sharps. In around 1976 I had a buddy that got a 1859 Shiloh carbine that we shot. He became my very best friend till he moved and took it with him! Next I handled a Sile which didn't stand up to the fit and finish of the Shiloh. Years later (1979) I got to start working at Shiloh and the learning curve went straight up! Soon I was given a 50 X 2 1/2" by Wolfgang and later got to handle and shoot original and replica Sharps. If there is a bright spot in the universe I was standing in the middle of it! This fall I'll hunt white tail with my 40/70 and I'm figuring out how to got bear hunting next year with that same 50 in Alaska. Just need to come up with some big bucks, anyone want to buy a soul?

Gunsmoke The River Slim Pickens is using a Sharps buffalo rifle. Jack Elam is also in the episode. Who could ask for more.

The first movie for me was titled 'The Last Hunt'. It had Stewart Granger using the Sharps.

Believe it or not, this same movie also had a 'second' first time to see rifle, for me. Robert Taylor was using a Win 1876.

I still watch this movie at least once a year.

First time I remember noticing the Sharps was watching True Grit (the 1969 version) when I was a young lad in the 1980s. Then came Quigley although the Sharps bug still didn't bite. The movie that really got me thinking about a Sharps was Legends of the Fall. A Brad Pitt movie, lol. But I thought Decker's big Sharps was the coolest part of the whole film. After that it was only a matter of time until I added one (ok well, more than one) to the stable.

Can't remember the movie, but it had Slim Pikins in it and he was packing a Sharps, and I remember thinking it was actually his own.

Listening to my Grandfather tell me tales of Davy Crockett at the Alamo and Billy Dixon at Adobe Walls, got me interested in the long rifles and Sharps.

A sharps named Nemesis was featured in "The Trackers" starring Kris Kristoffersen. Lot of people think the movie is not that good but I think its great.

The Tracker is one of my favorite westerns. The use of the Sharps was a major factor.

Quigley is my favorite movie, but learning to shoot and competing with the
good shooters at 1000 yds, NCOWS at Ackley Ia. Then we made a road trip
to Dodge City, Adobe walls, and the Nat. cowboy museum that has 2 original
big fifties sold at Zimmermans in Dodge. I had my Pederosoli turned into a 16
lb. 50/90. I had a buffalo ranch close where I harvested 3 buffs including a 1800
lb bull. Then got a 45/90 Shiloh, so I guess I was truly bitten by the bug.

I watched that movie as a youngster at school - that big winchester left an indelible imprint on me - It took some years and a couple of frustrating misses but in 2014 I got my 76 - last year I found a you tube version of the movie I could actually play -

have a close look at the buffalo shoot, they did that with a highpower rifle, every animal head shot, can tell that by the way they go down - in a few places can even see the little puff of dust and hair fly from the shot - the guy on the trigger was a proper marksman.

Quigley was the movie that prompted me to buy a sharps (a Pedersoli) I watched it again last night.
