Rawhide thong for holster edge

Question. I want to make a western holster with the edge of the pouch held together with a whip stitched thong rather than stitched with linen thread.  I bought a tool from Tandy with slits but the slits are so far apart that there is a gap between the thong. 

Anyone suggest how to make a holster so there isn't a big gap between the wraps.

Either get a different chisel with closer tines, or do it the old fashioned way, and poke the holes with an awl.

I have used an old screwdriver that I sharpened a bit and used it to punch the slots.   It worked pretty well.
