Spur straps

Okay, not the top equipment item but there are several styles.  I just got a set of spurs and now need straps. I have a lot of leather around the place so I'll make my own but need some comments on whether one design is better than another and, in the old west, was one design used more than another? Thanks for any help.  Also, on the chains....I want them. How do you tie them into the spurs?
