I  have found that in all my .30s, if I don't use gas checks, I get pretty wide patterns out past SASS distance.  Even at our relatively low velocities.  Gas checks put the holes very close together.  YMMV, but I'd highly recommend checks for what we do.  Though the teflon tape patch sounds very intriguing!
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

I was going to order another supply of Hunters  193 .311 bullets...but they were out and backordered.
So I decided since I had  some 90 Grain 30 Cal Mauser C96 coated on order a PENN Bullets
I'd try his 180 grain  .311  coated bullets.... and the wait began
I placed the order in late February....and waited ...I checked up several times  , today I called,  Robert said he ship tomorrow
( blamed he can't get any help , nobody wants to forgo the unemployment , because with both the State & Feds paying, its more that most were making WORKING !   ( he is right ! )

Its no big deal, he had not charge me as yet, and with Woo HOO Boo Hoo , and primers short supply , and the range on limited hours...
But I would like to give then a try .... I'll follow up "if" I get them  ???
when planets align...do the deal !

I do the reverse. I use Federal 215 Magnums in my BP 45-70.
More of the BP voodoo, some use pistol primers, others rifle std, you use magnum, still others use news print over the primer.  All the variations make one's head hurt without getting into powder, lube or wads.

I keep it simple.  I just don't LOAD black powder cartridges!

.....lol, I'm on the exact opposite end of the spectrum. My experience with loading smokeless equals exactly 10 .357 rounds to try in my SAA.

Guess what !   I got a heavy box in the mail today,,,, my Penn Bullets arrived just 10 months later ...
Total surprise, I never was informed they shipped, nor hit my card   ???
I'm please with the quality, less so with lead time  :-\   , but he has had issue with help , and I think some health too....

I've been using them and they seem to work fine.  Aluminum is much softer than barrel steel.
Hmmm wonder if aluminum gas checks would fall into the same category as Aluminum cleaning rods and thus be discouraged.  I have no clue, perhaps someone out there does.  I generally just get 210 grainers with gas checks installed already from Montana Bullet Works.  Shoot them over 10-11 grains of AA2 from Krag or 03 springfield for GAF.  For Sass Long Range enough Varget to get them up to the 2000 - 2100 FPS range.  Have not noticed any real leading at those velocities but am shooting out of essentially new barrels.  Prolly less than 1000 rounds out of either rifle since the New Criterion Barrels were installed.
