Does any one have good reference book for USMC uniforms pre 1920?  I have "Equipping the Corps" by Tulkoff and it is a great book for a number of things but nothing on uniforms.  He had talked about a Vol. 2 to cover uniforms but it seems that never got done.  I also have his book "Grunt Gear" and "782" by Harlan Glenn but of course those don't have anything pre ww2 never mind pre WW1.

Any one have a suggestion for a quality book on the subject?  I'm really looking for info on early Khaki or Forrest green uniforms.

Thanks!

I have a Cavalry buddy who is a retired Gunny and a former (maybe current) historical consultant on certain Corps aspects.  I will pass your question on to him and see if he has any references.

Thanks!  I've been looking online and it can be hard to pin down that time frame.

You did.  It worked!!!  :)

This is not the happiest of holidays but is an day of remembrance.  I'm still here; some of my shipmates are not.  To them we'll raise a glass tomorrow.

Not a tremendous amount of published material out there, as I've been looking into the uniforms worn during the Spanish-American War, the Boxer Rebellion, and at Veracruz.  Some related works have some useful photographs.  Here are some I've used:

Uniforms of the Sea Services by Col. Robert H Rankin (long out of print)

Uniforms of the Marines by Col. Robert H Rankin (long out of print)

The Landing at Veracruz 1914 by Jack Sweetman (long out of print)

the US Marine Corps (Greenhill Books/Stackpole Books; GI, the Illustrated History of the American Soldier and his Uniform and Equipment series #9) by Col Charles Cureton

Equipping the Corps, 1892-1937: Vol 1, Webgear, Weapons and Headgear, by Alex S Tulkoff.  As you noted, he doesn't have much on the uniforms, but there are some useful photographs.

The National Marine Corps Museum at Quantico has some uniforms from the Spanish-American War, and of course WWI, on display.  You might contact them and see if they have any recommendations.
