I have not owned a "real Colt" since my 1898 vintage one I had in .38WCF, back about 1999.  I work at a local gun shop part time, and an opportunity walked in to buy a 1977 vintage Single Action Army with 4 5/8" barrel, blued and color case finish is 99+% with Colt factory black plastic (gutta percha?) grips. It has no box or paperwork, but it will be a shooter for me, so I don't care!  We are still negotiating, but looks like it will be around $1200.

Good deal, I assume?

Sounds good to me!  What caliber?  And it's a Colt, so it's 4 3/4" not 4 5/8" (  :D )

Sounds like the '78 vintage 44 Spcl I bought 20 years ago with no box but looking unfired.  I paid $900 back then.  $1200 for an SAA in excellent shape sounds pretty awesome these days!

I think the grips are still some kind of rubber but not gutta percha any more.

That's a 3rd Generation Colt which is less desirable to some but still a real Colt and most of them are quite handsome to behold. $1200 for a ninety-nine percent 3rd Gen Colt seems like a good price, particularly in this gun starved market.

Oh, and the stocks are indeed some form of plastic these days.

I would have jumped on it myself , congrats

Well, slight glitch.  Someone told her it is worth way more, maybe $1,800-$2,000!  The Shop owner pointed out that $1,795 is full retail for a new gun, in the box, with a warranty. This one, while nice, has no box or papers, and does have some dings in the grip frame by the screw in the bottom.  I told her $1300 is tops or I walk.  I don't need it more than that.  I may find out tomorrow.   She also has a 7.5 inch with real stag grips and real gold "Colt" inlaid in the top of the grip frame behind the hammer.  She wants more for that.

It's a good deal.  If she says no, hand her a card with your contact info and tell her to call when she gets tired of watching it sit.

She is stuck on $1500.  I have it on hold.  $1500 would likely be fair, but I still hope to get it for $1300-1350.

Excellent!  And .45 is the most desirable model.  Some folks have talked about early 3rd gens having some issues.  OD#3 has a youtube on comparing a Standard, USFA, Uberti, and Colt, and he touches on some of those things.  Knowing what to look for, I can see that yeah, the hammer checkering is a little different, and some other little details that don't bother me a whit.  The first one I bought had a line around the cylinder and had timing problems, so I had an action job done on it.  The second one, which was like new, I just put in a spring kit and it feels just ALMOST as smooth as the one with the action job, and they have had over 3000 rounds each now.  I know you don't shoot smokey stuff much now, but I can say that the lack of a removable cylinder bushing has not been any problem shooting BP in mine.

Not to be a nuisance, but just exactly whom is this "SHE" you are constantly mentioning???  :o As in "SHE" having Colts for sale??  ::) Or, did I miss something earlier I should've paid attention to??  :P

People are STILL HAZARDOUS to Yer Health

She is a customer at our gunshop who is selling her deceased husbands guns.  The only other Colt she has is a nice 1972 7.5" SAA in .45 that the owner wants.

There is one of those "SHEs" that came into my friendly LGS too.

Her late husband was quite the collector and Alaskan outdoorsman apparently

There is a Shiloh Sharps  in 45/110  $3500.00
A Freedom Arms in 454 Casull ( sold ) $$$$
there were 3 Ruger Bisley's  in  454 Casull - 2 are sold -  last one is a Linebaugh custom w/ real ivory's @ $4500.00  :o

A very fancy Weatherby & a very custom Mauser I think both in 458 Win mag. , though not positive  :-\
A Remington 600 in .308 & Winchester Mod 70 also 458 win.

There was box of reloading stuff ( no presses ) I saw two or 3 RCBS Die sets 458 Win mag. 308 etc.   , sets assorted tools ...and what GRABBED my attention a shoe box marked PRIMERS
I assumed Large Pistol & Large Rifle primers ( I could not see inside  :-\
I was hoping to get it  ...but she kept is as a lot and it sold the lot @ $2000  :'(

planets were not aligned,  in fact the Galaxy was $$$$ Far Far away

Even $1500 is a deal. I recently sold a 3rd Gen SAA in .357 on GB for $2300

Tuolumne Lawman

Used it as one of my main match pistols.  Shot clean with it!  Very nice!  Need to figure how to get another real Colt!....
