Wouldn't this make an interesting project?

Put a couple of old square gin or whiskey bottles inside and you're ready to go.

RCJ, Yes it would. Would be real cool to break that out at the National Congress of Old Whiskey Samplers at the convention.

That's really a fine piece. Such character. Thanks for the link.

It looks like that strap used to go across the top, under the handle, to keep the lid on. A simple and effective design.

Without prior knowledge that it was a bottle box, I would have thought it was a Naval Field Glasses Case!

That would be fine project for the Leathersmiths here to reproduce.

Interesting the center divider only appears to be attached in the rear. I wonder if that was meant to be able to fold back to make an open box or move side to side to accommodate different size bottles if it was truly meant to be a bottle carrier.

The more I look at it, with that definite taper from the top down, I think it would be for gin bottles, which were almost always tapered.

That divider probably only needed to be attached along the back, as it was likely stiff enough to not have much play. Only enough to accommodate different dimensions of mold-blown or mouth-blown tapered bottles and yet not interfere with the wonderfully tooled design on the front.

It had to be a one-off commission made for a specific customer's request.

It would certainly be a choice fashion addition to one's Texas Barbecue Gun and holster.

I'm not certain it's tapered. I think that's an illusion from the photos looking downward. It is made from one piece of leather wrapped all the way around and sewn at the one corner so to make it tapered would take some deliberate and precise angle changes on the cut for that piece along top and bottom precisely at the corners. It could be done but certainly add a bit of challenge.
