I found it revealing that in the "official" instructions for loading it mentions "without wadding or patch" used with powder and ball.

Excellent, Dave!  I'm glad you brought out that it was the "Ranger Size" pistol.  It was designed with the Rangers in mind, not the Navy.  My favorite pistol of all time.

As awesome as the Navy Six was/is, it was only made better by Richards and Mason.  I will admit that in my case, that is the Navy for the lazy man.

I love the look and feel of that conversion but admittedly have never fired an original.  The closest I have come to that is firing the Uberti repop.

Just ordered one of Eras Gone Richmond Labs bullet molds. I like the design of the conical. Can't wait 'til warmer Spring weather to cast up some balls for the Leech & Rigdon.
