Who's your favorite cowboy singer or do you even like cowboy music?

Mine is Lucky Bill.  Not only is he a great singer but he's great shooter and a very nice person.  Fun to be around too.  :)

Mine has to be The Comstock Cowboys.  But then they are a local group, but perform in proper attire, including firearms and in a very proper venue- the Bucket of Blood Saloon in Virginia City NV.  They are Cowboy musicians, not just country/western.

I can't say I have a favorite since there are so many good ones. I can tell you who it isn't, though. It isn't Lorne Greene. I heard him sing the theme song for Bonanza. Whoa, that was lacking. He had a whole album, too. In general, I like the more modern ones, though. Clint Black, Edie Raven, Toby Keith.

Your correct, Luck Bill.  He is one of us.  From our neck of the woods.  Great cowboy musician, friend and shooter.  After him Don Edwards and on.

Give me some Marty Robbins, he really had a command of his voice, he's missed.

Of course if the spectrum is slightly broadened, Merle Haggard is, of course, a god, and Willie Nelson can pen a tune almost as good as he can belt one out.

A tip of the hat to the great cowboy minstrels, one and all.

My practice partner, Frederick Jackson Turner.  Not only is he a World Champion Duelist and GREAT cowboy, he can belt out a tune that'll bring down the house.

Slim Silver

Sounds like you folks are pretty well gettin' a list of the greats, but nobody has mentioned the late and great Chris Ledoux.  He was not only a Cowboy singer, but a true Cowboy as well.  Many folks didn't know who he was until Garth mentioned him in song then folks started huntin for his albums.  I spent a lot of hours listening to his 8-tracks in the 70s.  He used to sell them out of his truck on the rodeo circuit.  Yep, fine singer and a better person.

Damn.  Wish I'd ah had some advance notice there, cousin.  Wouldah put my ear plugs in..................

Willie, er Lucky Bill, does a great job on his CDs.  Has a real good voice for it.  Last thing ya wanna do is tell the boy he does good with his 'Country' singin'.  He'll tell ya quick it ain't 'Country', it's 'Cowboy'.

Banquets at big shoots 'round these parts wouldn't be the same without him.  He don't just sit up on stage and sing.  He's got the knack of gettin' folks involved in the show.  When ya see Tricky Trina's tag line 'bout ridin' 'er hoss 'Totally Clueless', that came from one of Willie's shows.  And, mi amigos, lemme tell ya....  THAT was a hoot!

Willie shoots them matches Saturday mornin'.  Does the entertainin' at the banquets Saturday evenin'.  Finishes the shoots Sunday just like ever'body else.

He ain't above lettin' no-talent bums like me get on stage with 'im to do a song.  He 'n me did one not long ago.  Like Missouri Marshal tole me when we finished, 'you can't carry a note in a slop bucket' 'n he's right, I can't.  Willie don't care.  Wants his audience to have fun.

'Sides that.  At his home shootin' club, he's gone above and beyond buildin' props, hell, whole buildings, to try to make the place the best it can be.

Ain't gottah line on his CDs at the moment.  Might have about a month from now when I see 'im next.  Make anybody the same deal I've offered 'fore if I get some.  You buy one 'n if ya don't like it, send it back 'n I'll make a full refund.  Sold several, ain't made a refund yet.

I have to go with Marty Robbins also. He's always been a favorite of mine. Nobody mentioned the Sons of the Pioneers.

Doc Neeley

Since Marty Robbins has been nominated I'll say Eddy Arnold (Cattle Call is one of my favorites), don't laugh but Burl Ives (best version of Home on the Range) and last is Frankie Lane.
All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived, we dream. -- T.K. Whipple

Bitterwheat

One of my all time favorites was Tex Ritter. I also like Willie and Waylon. and I don't think you can beat the Sons of the Pioneers for a group

Rascal Ralph

Since there's knowledge about groups here, can someone tell me the name of a group that I saw on tv. 3 guys dressed B-weastern, main guy I think they called ranger something. They were fun "cowboy" singers. There not riders in the sky are they? Franky Lane's "Moonlight Gambler " is my all time favorite! RHR.
In case you don't know me, I'm just a friend you hadn't met yet.

I suppose ole Marty Robbins is my favorite but I listened to a lot of  Eddie Arnold growing up,   My Mom and Dad had went to Nashville in the 40's and stayed next door to him at a motor Inn, My Dad said Eddie Arnold had sat out on the porch and visited with him for about all night, Dad said he was at that time the friendliest guy you ever met.  He was just a ole farm boy who had got a chance at singing, he told my Dad, that he had followed a mule plowing many a day and would sing the whole time. so neeless to say we listened to him a lot.
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

The list is too long,  Friends with the Comstock Cowboys and try to see them as often as we can, In fact Kurt and I are listening to Christmas in the Sierra right now.  We have some orriginal Chris Le Doux and Ian Tyson stacked in behind.  Sierra Packer has one of his autographed 8 tracks some where.  I also have to throw in the(gasp!) New Christy Minstrels having grown up listening to them.  There are also some other regional groups that our families have introduced us to like the Ringling 5 (MT) and the Bar J Wrangler(SD & WY)

Del, have you listened to Don Edwards' album that he cut with Waddie Mitchel?  Lots of fun there including the song "Yuppies in the Sky" ;D
