Gentlemen,  There is a very nice Trapdoor Springfield rifle available at our local gun shop.  Looks to have the 1879 sight, and the bore is bright and shiny.  It's at the Sport Shed in Ord, Nebraska if anyone is interested.

Price tag?

In case my wife is looking, I'm asking for a friend  ;)

I think it was $1200.  Very nice shape, and the bore looked just about perfect.  Those things have really gone up.  I bought one twenty five years ago for less than three hundred bucks.  On the other hand, it wasn't as nice as this one, either.

At that price, I think the one I have will be enough. I think the price tag was about 600, mid to late 90s.Traded another trapdoor for it, and some cash. My trade was a 73, but stock was cut down pretty short-shorter than a carbine stock. The one I got was the later rod bayonet model. Traded at a gun show, and I heard that he had parted out that cut stock rifle the same day and made a nice profit. OK with me, I just wanted a nice condition complete rifle, and I got one.

I ended up trading mine straight across for an early Model 52 Winchester with the original Lyman Model 48 target sight.  I still shoot it, so I think I did okay!

$1200? Wow,  I know of one that a blackpowder vendor has. He's way below that price. I've been waffling on getting it. The guys in my BP club keep telling me he wants too much? I may have to go take another look at it. it's a full stock infantry rifle.

$1200 for an unaltered infantry rifle with a near perfect bore is a reasonable price right now.  If you know of one for less, you'd best grab it.

Yeah, the last original one I bought was near 20 years ago and gave $900 for it and it wasn't as nice as the one Niederlander is describing.

Dale, how does it compare in condition to the one Black Jack Ketchum from Colorado bought from the other LGS

Not THAT nice, but I've never seen one like that one before or since.  The bore on this one looks comparable.  (Keep in mind I wasn't looking at it with my super power readers on.)  To give a better description, I'd have to take my references along to see how correct everything is.  I'm assuming anyone buying it would want to inspect it themselves.

Well, I went over the gun I knew of and from what I can find. It is an 1873. The stock has the usual dinks and dings. There's a chunk broken in front of the front barrel band, Finish still has reasonable bluing. Bore is good and shootable. Guy I purchased it from is a well known vendor at Friendship and also my neighbor. Decided waffling over it was thru. I ended up with just shy of $600 in the gun. He knows if he sold me a dog, it will be coming back, lol. Now I need to get brass, primers and some 405 grain bullets. Yeah, imagine we've all got that regret of something we should have done!

You done good.  Enjoy it!  Last summer I found this little mongrel at the local antique mall.  One of my favorite single shots now.  https://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=62625.0

My last Trapdoor purchase was billed as an 1869 Cadet from Rock Island Auction, March 2018. Looking at nose piece in front of barrel band, chopped flat vs rounded, so it is a more likely a chopped 1868 Rifle. Paid $600, other than chopped, it is my best original.

I live about 30 miles south of Indianapolis, Indiana. My running buddy lives down by the Ohio River close to Vevay (think west of Cincinnati). I notice Bill Proctor used to post here. Sad about Bill. I knew him from black powder shooting and 18th century reenacting/trekking.

I think the closest Muster to you would be the ones near Chicago.

Coming up real soon-if the Wu-Flu doesn't cancel it.

I saw that. That's two weeks out. Afraid it won't be this year. We need to get our guns, clothes and camping gear squared away. When we come, though we may be greenhorns. At this anyway. We will want to look like we belong there....we've been involved in reenacting/blackpowder shooting for 25-26 years. This will be a new venue.

Robert, I bet they'd let you shoot regardless of how you're dressed.  As a reenactor, you've probably already got stuff that would make you "blend in" as it were.  The best way to see what we do is just to come shoot.  I think you'd have a blast!

+1 on what Ned said. Just pick out some gear from your reenacting that looks sorta late 1800s-ish and you're good to go. Most here don't go full period correct in their camp gear anyway. If that's too soon, there's the "2-in-1" Musters in Iowa at the end of September. I'm planning on making that one.

.....we-llll, September and October are gonna be pretty filled. Next season looks like a better bet.
